Hawks – Pelicans

The Pelicans will look to recover after one of their worst performances of the season when they meet the Hawks tonight in Atlanta, but the hosts are also on the back of a pretty harsh defeat. Palicans are a 2,5 point spread underdog.

The Hawks have a solid 7-6 win-loss record thus far, also posting an impressive 5-2 at home. However, the NBA Eastern Conference is so poor that we really can’t take this records seriously. Atlanta is a decent side, they play some good offensive basketball, have some shooters and an all star caliber frontcourt with Millsap and Horford – that`s it though, they are really not special. Atlanta just lost by 11 points to Toronto 2 days ago, they even lost at home to the Lakers a week back. Aside for their recent win against the Wizards, the Hawks have consistently lost to good teams this NBA season.

Anthony Davis has emerged as one of the best players in the league this season, arguably being an early candidate / favorite for MVP, and the Pelicans are looking to ride his back to the playoffs. New Orleans has a very nice group put together, however they have struggled a bit in the stacked Western Conference, they are better than their 7-6 record (3-4 away) suggests. New Orleans suffered an ugly home defeat to Sacramento last time out, with Davis taking just 12 shots, and coach Williams stated he wants Davis to take at least 20 shots per game, starting today.

New Orleans is clearly the better team between the two, they are coming after a bad day at the office against Sacramento and it`s unlikely they can play two bad games in a row. Davis also had an off night and he is sure to be much more effective today, especially after hearing coach Williams had to say. Look for Davis to destroy Atlanta`s frontcourt, and without that frontcourt the Hawks are useless – I`d say it`s a pretty good matchup for New Orleans. The visitors also had 1 extra day of rest, so I`m picking them to win this.

No point in taking the +2,5 spread as far – too low to provide value as I`m concerned. My tip is a straightforward Pelicans win, I can see them getting a 5-10 point victory. Prediction: Atlanta Hawks – New Orleans Pelicans 98 – 105.
