Australia – Peru

Australia Peru World Cup tips

Australia will look for a win which would give them hopes of qualification from Group C, while the already knocked out Peruvians will try to put on a good display and leave the competitions with their heads held high.

Not much was expected from Australia in this World Cup given their general lack of talent and their unimpressive qualification process, where they were almost knocked out by Syria. However, the Socceroos made a very good account of themselves so far, being unlucky to lose 1-2 against France and snatching a 1-1 draw against Denmark. As such, Australia still has hopes of qualification and will likely go through if they win and Denmark loses.

Peru lost both games so far, but the South Americans have every reason to consider themselves unlucky. Pery deserved at least a draw in the 0-1 loss to Denmark, arguably even a win, and the team was again solid in another 0-1 loss to France. With no chances of going through, Peru will play for honor here, and they will try to prove they deserved more from this World Cup.

Team news & lineups:

Nabbout is suspended for Australia, while Peru will miss Farfan and has Tapia doubtful.

Australia: Ryan – Risdon, Sainsbury, Milligan, Behich – Leckie, Mooy, Jedinak, Arzani – Rogic – Juric

Peru: Gallese – Advincula, Rodriguez, Ramos, Trauco – Aquino, Yotun – Carrillo, Cueva, Flores – Guerrero

Australia (1 point, 2-3 goal difference) needs to win this game and needs Denmark (4 points, 2-1 goal difference) to lose against France in order to have any shot of going through.

If Australia wins by 2 or more goals and Denmark loses, the Socceroos qualify – the same if Australia wins by only 1 goal but Denmark loses by two or more, or with 0-1. If Australia wins by 1 and Denmark loses by 1 (but scores) is where the mathematics gets more difficult and not worth explaing to its fullest, as it involves number of goals scored and even number of yellow cards.

Point is, Australia needs to win and they could even find themselves in a late situation in which they will need to win by 2 or more. While they surely won`t go gung-ho from the start, they can`t just sit back and defend either. The Socceroos also do not have a defensive DNA, they are an offensive minded side with not much talent at the back, and they proved this by scoring (and also conceding) against both France and Denmark.

As for Peru, even though they lost both games 0-1, they had plenty of chances, some of them really big, and have really been unfortunate not to score and not to claim points. Look for them to try and remedy that here. They will play with no pressure and that should make them even more dangerous in terms of creating chances (even if they miss Farfan), and this time you would expect them to have less bad luck in front of goal.

With an offensive minded Australia team which needs to win, and with a pressure-free Peru side which played good attacking football in this tournament and will be eager to prove its worth, chances are we could see a rather open match and some goals here.

My tip will be over 2.5 goals to be scored, as the odds are sensibly higher than the “both to score” option, although the second does look a bit safer. Prediction: Australia – Peru 1-2.
