BATE – AS Roma

Totti Roma Champions League goal

BATE Borisov and AS Roma will meet in what is already a crucial Champions League clash, particularly for the visitors. Roma can get into a great position to qualify with a win.

The hosts have reached the group stages yet again, which is a performance in itself, but surely they will try to do better than last season, when they were demolished in a not so difficult group, amassing a 2-24 goal difference. BATE seems stronger this year, they are dominating the Belarussian league with much more authority, but in Europe fortunes have not changed – BATE struggled to qualify and was soundly beaten by Leverkusen in the first match, 1-4.

Roma’s 1-1 home draw against Barcelona gave the Italians big hopes of going trough in a group that also contains Leverkusen. Obviously backing up that draw with a win in Belarus would be crucial for their qualification hopes. Roma is on the back of a convincing 5-1 home win over Carpi, a team that previously frustrated top Serie A teams like Inter or Napoli. The victory came at the cost of injuries for Francesco Totti, Edin Dzeko and Seydou Keyta, but Roma will still be confident with its position and form coming into this match. The visitors have a lot of depth this season and can easily cover Totti and Dzeko with Iturbe, Gervinho or Salah, while Keita would have likely been a substitute today anyhow.

Team news & lineups:

Rodionov will be the only missing player for BATE, while Roma will have to do without captain Francesco Totti, along with Dzeko, Keita, Strootman and Szczesny.

BATE: Chernik – Polyakov, Milunovic, Dubra, Mladenovic – Aleksievich, Baga – Stasevich, Hleb, Gordeychuk – Signevich

AS Roma: De Sanctis – Florenzi, Rudiger, Manolas, Digne – Pjanic, De Rossi, Nainggolan – Gervinho, Iturbe, Salah

Roma will definitely not want to miss this chance of getting a foothold on the second place. The way the group is looking, the result today might well be crucial in deciding Roma’s faith at the end of the group. While traveling to Eastern Europe is never easy, Roma seems to be in good form and is definitely a class above BATE in terms of quality. The hosts have been really poor in Europe recently, completely unable to at least stay close to teams of Roma’s quality.

I don`t expect the visitors to blow these hugely important three points. Despite some injuries, Roma should still have too much for this BATE side that doesn`t seem exactly competitive at this level right now. My tip is AS Roma to win. Prediction: BATE Borisov – AS Roma 0-1.
