BATE Borisov hosts FC Porto hoping to avoid another humiliating defeat in the Champions League group H.
BATE has 3 points in this group and is third in the standings … normally a great achievement so far but looking at BATE’s results it is hard to consider this campaign a success. Hosts beat out of form Bilbao 2-1 but suffered crushing defeats in the rest of the games: 0-5 and 0-7 vs. Shakhtar in the last two games and 0-6 vs. today’s opponents Porto in the first match in the group. In the league they are doing much better with two consecutive 4-0 winning results but of course Champions League is another level and BATE’s defense does not seem up to the task. For today BATE will not count on Khagush (suspended) and Filipenko is questionable.

FC Porto is not doing bad at all at the moment … in the last 5 matches they won 4 of them and made a draw away to Estoril in the last one. They did not play this weekend so had more time to rest and prepare the match than BATE (even if BATE rested some players in their weekend game). Porto is already qualified in the Champions League but they have a great opportunity today to get a big edge in the fight for the first place … or maybe even book first place depending on what Shakhtar does vs Bilbao (Shakhtar is 2 pts behind). The visitors have a full squad ahead of this encounter.
Porto is qualified but won’t come to Belarus relaxed … they know how crucial first place in the group is and can make the difference for them between reaching the quarters or going out in the Last 16. Rested and with no injuries, I like Porto’s chances to beat a team that they trashed 6-0 not so long ago. It will be a different game, but look for Porto to win even in the Belarus cold weather … that will be my tip, simple Porto win. BATE would love a point but they seem vastly outmatched at this level this year. I think dropping odds of 1.60 deserve a stake of 9 units on the Portugese team.
