Evenly matched encounter in Belarus, as BATE Borisov takes on Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League playoffs first leg.
BATE Borisov played some great football this season in Belarus and they clearly seem to have a better team than last year, but their recent results have been underwhelming, including in the Champions League. BATE barely edged two modest sides in Dundalk and Videoton (who was playing very poorly), both times 2-1 aggregate. On top of this, they got just 1 point in the last 2 domestic rounds, but it can be easily argued that their focus was on this Partizan match, as they also rested a few players in the last league match.

Partizan defeated Steaua in the previous round after a 3-0 aggregate win over Dila Gori. But Steaua was in dreadful form and even so Partizan struggled big time, needing a 3 goal comeback in the second half of the second leg (with an extra man) in order to put the qualification to sleep. The visitors also lost some steam in Serbia, losing 3-2 to Vojvodina last round, without even resting key players. They are not exactly playing solid football right now.
This is pretty easy to call as far as I`m concerned. Both sides are going through a bit of a small crisis right now, but both know this tie will be defining for their season and both will feel they have a solid shot to advance further. Partizan is a decent side, but not great and the same can be said about BATE. With so much on the line and with the current circumstances of the game, I can`t see anybody taking any risks, especially in the first 45 minutes.
BATE Borisov was tied at half time in 3 of the previous 4 qualifying rounds and I see a similar scenario today against a team that pretty much matches them in both quality and form. Maybe BATE will get the result in the end (they will probably need a lucky break for that), but my tip is a draw at half time. Prediction: BATE Borisov – Partizan Belgrade 2-1 (1-1 half time).
