Budapest will host the Womens Champions League final between Buducnost and Gyor, with Gyor being the odds-on favorite to retain their trophy in Hungary. It’s safe to say these have been the best sides in Europe this season and deserving finalists.
Buducnost put together a great roster this season after a disappointing campaign last year and it didn`t take long for results to appear. In the first group stage Buducnost slightly underperformed, finishing 2nd behind Midtjylland, but the team was much better in the main group stage. Despite finishing again in 2nd place, this time against today`s opponents Gyor, Buducnost played some great point and finished undefeated (3 wins, 3 draws). The Montenegro side also held Gyor to 2 ties, 23-23 on the road and 26-26 at home.
Buducnost is well known to be the most physical team in top women’s handball right now, with a very aggresive game style and excellent defense. This could be seen yesterday in the semifinals, With Buducnost getting a 22-20 win in extra time against a strong Vardar Skopje side after 16-16 over the regular 60 minutes. Right back Cristina Neagu was the main threat with 6 goals and 9 assists.

With the exception of the games against Buducnost, Gyor cruised this season in the Champions League, winning all their matches. The campaign has been similar to the one last year, when Gyor lost just one game on route to lift the trophy. The hungarian side had a relatively easy time in the semifinals against Midtjylland and the 29-26 scoreline is a little bit misleading, as Gyor dominated from start to finish – with Anita Gorbicz a perennial threat, scoring 8 times. However, Midtjylland was the worst team playing in this Final 4.
Gyor might be the best team in the world right now and has the advantage of playing at home (though not in their Arena), but Buducnost has proved able to surprise them twice already this season and the Montenegro side played better on the road in the competition. Gyor has problems in breaking Buducnost’s defense down and has been punished big time by the Montenegro side from the 9 meter line on offense. In the group stage Buducnost had lapses in focus on the defensive end for a couple of minutes at a time and that cost them victory in each game. Today in the final I reckon Buducnost will be at their best and if they will play defense like against Vardar, they have at least a 50% chance to lift the trophy, so there`s a lot of value in these odds.
