Cameroon – Ghana

Cameroon Ghana betting preview ACN2017

Cameroon and Ghana will square off in the second semifinal of the 2017 African Cup of Nations, with the winner set to meet Egypt in the last act.

Cameroon suffered a big blow at the start of the tournament, when 7 top players like Choupo-Moting or Matip decided not to take part in the competition. It was another disappointing moment in Cameroon’s recent history, filled with poor performances and disagreements between players and the football federations. Reaching the semifinal has been an impressive performance for Cameroon without many of their best players, but the football they played was hardly any good. Cameroon barely scraped trough with 3 draws and 1 very close win (2-1 in the group vs Guinea-Bissau). The Indomitable Lions defeated Senegal via penalties in the quarters after a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes.

Ghana finished second in a group with Egypt, Mali and Uganda. They took care of DR Congo in the quarters with a 2-1 victory and played their best football of the tournament in the second half of that game. Ghana has done well so far in the competition and the second place finish in the group can not be held against them, considering the fact that Egypt has been the best team in the Cup of Nations so far.

Team news & lineups:

Both teams are healthy and can field their best lineups according to reports.

Cameroon: Ondoa – Fai, Ngadeu, Telkeu, Oyongo – Djoum, Siani, Bassong, Ekambi – Moukandjo, Aboubakar

Ghana: Razak – Afful, Amartey, Boye, Acheampong – Acquah, Wakaso – Atsu, A. Ayew, J. Ayew – Gyan

The average goals / game scored in the matches of these two teams is 1.25 for Cameroon and 1.5 for Ghana.

Cameroon has scored a grand number of 3 goals so far in this tournament, while allowing 2. Ghana posted a “remarkable” 2-1 goal difference in the group stage, but they did beat DR Congo 2-1 in the quarters. However, DR Congo has been arguably the most offensive minded teams in the tournament, if not THE most offensive minded.

The main objective for both teams during the tournament was to protect their defense and they succeeded so far. They played ugly, pragmatic football, as it often is the case in the African Cup of Nations. Considering the stakes of this match and the fact that it`s an evenly matched clash, I see no reason for which they should approach it any differently.

I expect a horrible game of football, with an endless midfield battle that could well last for 120 minutes if somebody doesn`t get a lucky break. Ghana is the favorite and they did have a great second half against DR Congo, but that doesn`t mean that much coming into this clash. The bookies did their job and have priced the under 2,5 goals at a ridiculous 1.40, a price that in my opinion is rarely worth taking for an under / over.

I think the draw holds the most value and is the smartest bet, even if a lucky goal can always ruin even the best analysis. As protection against that my tip will be a draw, but with insurance in case Ghana wins in regular time. Prediction: Cameroon – Ghana 0-0 (0-1 extra time).
