🎾 Casper Ruud – Denis Shapovalov ✅

The ATP Geneva final will see Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov go head 2 head in what should be a high quality match.

Casper Ruud had a tremendous season on clay so far and he will look to cap it off with a title prior to Roland Garros. The Dane Norwegian reached the semifinal in both the Monte Carlo and Madrid Masters tournaments, recording wins over Top 15 players like Schwartzman, Carreno Busta and Tsitsipas. Here in Geneva he had an easy schedule, getting past Sandgren, Koepfer and Andujar. He had some trouble against Koepfer, but played much better in the semifinal against Andujar.

Denis Shapovalov wasn’t in great form and wasn’t looking very dangerous at all until last week, when he took Nadal to a deciding set tiebreak in the Madrid third round. That was a massive achievement (even though Nadal was far from his best) and gave Denis confidence this week in Geneva, where he defeated Cecchinato, Djere and Cuevas, winning the last 5 sets he played.

This will be the first H2H meeting between the two players. Ruud is more natural on clay, but Shapovalov is dangerous on the surface as well, especially as this clay in Geneva is faster.

Shapovalov is putting together a good run of results, but to be honest he did not impress me that much this week. He played well, but not some kind of lights out tennis. Errors were still there, not as many as he often commits, but they were there.

Dennis struggled in his first match for two sets until blowing it open in the third vs Cecchinato. In his second match, the 6-4 6-4 win over Djere might seem routine, but it was far from that. Djere had 9 break points and, unless maybe I missed one, he failed to make a single return on any of them (plenty of second serves as well)! Even the break he did get was on a Shapovalov double fault if I recall correctly. That was just some epic chocking in the important moments by Djere, who should have at least won the first set. Shapovalov didn’t have to do anything to get out of all those difficult situations.

Finally, in the semifinals it was a better and cleaner performance by Shapovalov against Cuevas, but still nothing particularly remarkable.

Ruud himself wasn’t spectacular in the first two rounds, but it felt more calculated, things seemed to be under control for the whole time (maybe except for the first set against Koepfer). More importantly, Ruud showed another level in the semifinals against Andujar, suggesting he is now stepping on the gas in the final rounds.

Ruud should be too much for Shapovalov to handle on clay. He’s just at another level on this surface, as shown by the fantastic results he got in the Masters events the last couple of months. His smart aggressive game, his defense and consistent baseline play are perfect weapons to counter Shapovalov’s risky and volatile style of tennis. Shapovalov playing “well” might be enough to get past Djere or Cuevas, but against Ruud he would need his “A game”, no errors. We haven’t seen that this week, or anytime recently, maybe except some stretches against Rafa last week.

I’m backing Ruud to win a title he fully deserves. He’s the man to beat here. Prediction: Casper Ruud – Denis Shapovalov 7-6 6-4.
