Hornets – Hawks

Charlotte Hornets Atlanta Hawks NBA handicapping

The Charlotte Hornets will host the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night in the NBA.

The Hornets (10-10, 7-3 home) are looking pretty solid this season, mainly due to the All Star play of their main man, Kemba Walker. Walker has been excellent so far and it looks likely that he can lead his team to the playoffs. The Hornets are on the back of an impressive home win over the strong Bucks on Monday, and will look to build on that and go over .500 tonight against the Hawks.

Atlanta (5-16, 2-9 away) is in full rebuilding mode this season. The Hawks are tanking for draft picks and currently own the third worst record in the league. However, the Hawks are riding a surprising run of good form, winning two matches in a row – a home win against today`s opponent, the Hornets, on Sunday, and a victory against the Heat last night. Both were super close games though, being decided by a combined total of just 3 points!

Team news: The Hornets are fully healthy, while the Hawks will continue to miss Dorsey and Poythress.

The Hornets are 7-3 at home this season and they are definitely big favorites to defeat this poor Hawks side.

The Hawks might have won two in a row, but both were very close, and they will play this game less than 24 hours after their win in Miami. Being back to back will be a big disadvantage for the Hawks, and it`s highly unlikely for a young and rather poor team like them to have two good nights in a row. In fact, chances are they will have an off one tonight after putting in a huge effort to beat the Heat by two points last night.

One could point out that the Hawks defeated the Hornets on Sunday, but that has no relevance. The Hawks were at home, the Hornets were back to back, and Kemba Walker had a really bad game for them. Even with all these favorable circumstances, the Hawks barely won by a single point.

Look for a solid Hornets side to take care of business at home, and they should be able to win this big. The young Hawks have played above their level in the last two games and a (big) drop off is expected – especially since they are back to back on the road and had an exhausting fight last night.

Note that Charlotte has a +10.2 PPG differential at home this season, while the Hawks are -11.3 on the road. The two teams also bet once before in Charlotte this season (Nov. 6), and the Hornets won by 11. This all seems in line with the -12 point spread set by the bookies tonight – but when you factor in Atlanta being back to back on the road, one must feel that the line should be even higher.

My tip will be the Hornets to cover the -12 point (asian) handicap. Prediction: Charlotte Hornets – Atlanta Hawks 125 – 100.
