Cavaliers – Celtics

Cavs Celtics Game 3 handicapping

The Cleveland Cavaliers will attempt to even their Eastern Conference finals series at 2-2, when they host the Boston Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena on Monday night in Game 4.

The Cavs have struggled for most of the season but seemed to be back at their best after they swept the first seeded Raptors in the Conference semifinals. However, they were shocked by the Celtics in the first two games of the Conference finals, losing each of those games in Boston, and losing them badly. There was a lot of pressure on the Cavs in Game 3, but home court advantage proved to be a decisive advantage as they blew out the Celtics by 30 points on Saturday.

The Celtics will have another chance to put a dagger in Cleveland’s heart and take full control of the series tonight, but they will have to sort out their road woes if they are to have any chance. The exceptionally well coached Celtics have been amazing in these playoffs, surpassing all expectations to play so well without their best two players (Irving and Hayward) – but away from home they have been very poor.

Team news: The Celtics continue to have the same injury list (Irving, Hayward, Theis, Larkin), with backup PG Larkin having a chance to return tonight. The Cavs on the other hand are fully healthy.

The Celtics are 9-0 at home in the postseason, but they are 1-5 on the road! What’s more, their only road win was a bit of the fluke, as they were losing the game in Philadelphia in the conference semifinals before the young Sixers collapsed and beat themselves late in the game.

At the same time, the Cavs are also a team which performs much better at home than away – they are 6-1 at home in these playoffs.

Boston’s problems on the road were more than visible in Game 3 against the Cavs, and there`s no reason to expect much of a change in Game 4.

It`s a well known fact that role players perform much better at home in the playoffs, and Lebron had a lot of help from his teammates in Game 3. Boston’s young guys, however, were dreadful, and there`s no indication that things could change in Game 4. Having no superstar who can perform consistently home and away is probably the reason for the massive struggles Boston has on the road in this postseason.

This Celtics side is just not the same team when traveling, and it`s unlikely these young and inexperienced guys can win such a huge match, like this Game 4 is, in Lebron’s house. Expect the Cavs role players to have a decent performance again, and Lebron should be well rested to take control if needed – as he didn`t have to push too much in Game 3.

The point spread seems a bit on the low side here, so my tip will be Cavs to cover the -7 point (asian) handicap. Prediction: Cleveland Cavaliers – Boston Celtics 111 – 97.
