Palace – Liverpool

Mohamed Salah Crystal Palace Liverpool

Crystal Palace and Liverpool will square off at Selhust Park in the last match of the second round in the Premier League.

The hosts had an excellent end of the season last year under Roy Hodgson, managing to avoid the drop after a poor start, and the team is looking pretty good for this campaign. Palace started the season with a solid 2-0 win away at Fulham last weekend in what was a very entertaining game with lots of scoring chances. After having a rather quiet off season in terms of transfers, Palace’s main weapon this season is expected to be yet again the attacking partnership of Benteke and Zaha.

Liverpool kicked off their campaign with a convincing 4-0 drubbing of West Ham and Klopps’ side is looking really good right now – especially after impressing and scoring for fun in the pre season friendlies as well (although those are rarely relevant). The visitors are obviously expecting big things this year after spending no less than 150 million pounds on 4 players during the off season (Alisson, Keita, Fabinho, Shaqiri).

Team news & lineups:

Dann is out for Palace, while Meyer, Williams and Wickham are doubtful. Liverpool will miss Oxlade-Chamberlain, while Lovren, Fabinho, Matip and Klavan are doubtful.

Crystal Palace: Hennessey – Wan-Bissaka, Sakho, Tomkins, Van Aanholt – Townsend, Milivojevic, Kouyate, Schlupp – Zaha, Benteke

Liverpool – Alisson – Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson – Keyta, Henderson, Milner – Mane, Firmino, Salah

Liverpool is without a doubt a scoring machine, something which has been proved last season, as well as this year in pre-season friendlies and in the first round against West Ham. However, their defense remains suspect, and Palace will test it today at Selhust Park.

The hosts have plenty of attacking capabilities themselves with Zaha and Benteke up front, they have played entertaining football since Roy Hodgson took over last year and played a very open match in the first round against Fulham.

Crystal Palace will surely be able to create some chances here and has an honest shot to score a goal at home, but on the other hand their defense is unlikely to stop this red hot Liverpool offense.

It might also be worth noting that since Crystal Palace gained promotion in 2013, 10 of the 12 H2H meetings with Liverpool ended with over 2,5 goals – including a 2-1 Liverpool win here at Selhust Park back in March this year.

My tip here will be over 2,5 goals, a pretty simple bet, but one which makes sense both based on statistics and common logic. Prediction: Crystal Palace – Liverpool 2-2.
