CSKA Moscow – PSV

Seydou Doumbia Champions League goal

CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven will square off in the Champions League Group B, with PSV looking to back up the win against Manchester United, while the Russian will seek to put their first points on the board.

CSKA lost 0-1 in Wolfsburg two weeks ago but, while the result was tight, CSKA didn`t impress much. The Russians were second best for the entire match, they were dominated and could not get a hold of the ball despite having 50+ minutes to do something after Wolfsburg’s goal. To CSKA’s credit they are undefeated in Russia, topping the Premier League. They are on the back of a 1-1 draw against Lokomotiv over the weekend and will have another derby in the coming weekend, against Dinamo, so it`s a hellish week for the hosts.

PSV’s 2-1 win over Manchester United was no doubt impressive. One of the 5 wins in PSV’s last 6 matches, the United game validated the project of the Dutch champions, who spent the last few years building a young team and are now gaining the rewards. PSV is on the back of a 2-1 win over NEC and will hope that their brilliant offense will be able to pose a threat on the break for a CSKA team that leaked a lot of goals recently.

Team news & lineups:

Berezutski, Golovin and possibly Akinfeev will be out for the hosts. PSV won`t be able to count on Guardado, Willems, Koch, de Jong and Jozefzoon.

CSKA Moscow: Akinfeev – MΓ‘rio Fernandes, Berezutski, Ignashevich, Schennikov – Wernbloom, Natcho – Tosic, Dzagoev, Musa – Doumbia.

PSV Eindhoven
: Zoet – Arias, Brenet, Bruma, Moreno – Schaars, Maher, Propper – Lestienne, Narsingh, Locadia

Normally I would like PSV in this one, but they are missing a lot of players and haven`t been particularly impressive recently in Holland, getting two narrow wins and losing to Heracles. However, they should be able to bang in at least a goal, as their speed and flair up front will definitely cause big problems on counter-attacks. It has to be noted that PSV scored in all matches (including friendlies) played since February, while CSKA allowed goals in each of the last 6 outings. Also, Igor Akinfeev has allowed at least a goal in each of the last 32 Champions League games!

The Russians should also be able well to score at home, so I can see both sides finding the net here. My tip is Both teams to score. Prediction: CSKA Moscow – PSV Eindhoven 1-1.

Pick: Both to score
