🎾 Daniil Medvedev – Reilly Opelka ✅

World number 2 Daniil Medvedev takes on Reilly Opelka tonight in the Toronto Masters final as a 1.20 odds favorite.

Medvedev is coming after an absolutely ruthless performance against John Isner in the semifinals, as Daniil dismantled Big John’s serve for a 6-2 6-2 win. The Russian has been solid all week. He had a few ups and downs and had to dig deep especially in the quarters for a 2-6 7-6 7-6 win against Hurkacz, but overall he has played well here in Toronto. He also defeated Duckworth 2-0 and Bublik 2-1, and is definitely looking like he is reaching his peak now in the final stages.

This will be the biggest match of Opelka’s career. The Big serving American had the tournament of his life so far, not only reaching a masters final, but doing it in style by navigating a challenging draw. Opelka reached this stage by defeating Kyrgios, Dimitrov, Harris, Bautista-Agut and Tsitsipas – this was quite impressive. He lost three sets along the way.

Medvedev leads the H2H 3-1 (2-0 on outdoor hard courts). His only loss came last year in Sankt Petersburg, but he avenged it this year at Roland Garros.

Listen, Opelka has been playing really well. You can’t reach a masters final otherwise, and he has been so impressive beating top and / or in form players in virtually every round. However, this final is likely to be different.

Medvedev is starting to get that Djokovic-like (or Federer-like, or Nadal-like) quality and aura of reaching finals and easily dispatching lower ranked opponents who are having the tournament of their lives. Especially ones who maybe don’t have that many dimensions to their game, like Opelka.

The Russian has a lot of arguments to win this clash, and I would firstly mention his ability to neutralize big servers. Medvedev has a 3-1 record against Opelka, 2-0 vs. Isner, or 3-0 vs. Raonic.

It has to be mentioned that all matches vs Opelka went the distance, also Medvedev is 0-2 vs Kyrgios and 0-1 vs Karlovic, but his ability to play well against big servers can’t be denied.

On the same note, Medvedev will have an advantage by having met Isner in the previous round, who is probably the most similar player to Opelka currently on the tour. That was the perfect preparation, and we all saw what Medvedev did to Big John.

You also have to feel that Medvedev’s experience should help him, he’s getting so used to these big finals and playing well in them, while his opponent has never been anywhere close to competing on such a big stage.

I really like Medvedev to win this in convincing fashion. He looks like he saved his best tennis for the semifinals and finals, he matches up well against Opelka, he has the experience and also the fitness. Opelka played a lot of tennis this week, often in hot weather, so we’ll see how much he has left in the tank, as stamina is not his main quality.

I can see Medvedev cruising through his service games and then it will be a race to break Opelka’s serve. I’m sure he’ll have the looks and will get at least one or two breaks of serve. Hopefully Opelka doesn’t manage to steal a tiebreak here, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take, especially as it wouldn’t mean that the bet loses.

I’m taking Medvedev to cover the -3 game handicap, look for him to dominate and put Opelka on the wrong foot with his counter-punching style of play. This is a very good line because it voids the bet in case of a 7-6 6-4 victory for Daniil. Prediction: Daniil Medvedev – Reilly Opelka 6-3 7-6.
