Nuggets – Warriors

Curry Pelicans 13 threes record celebration dance

Denver Nuggets will host the Golden State Warriors tonight in the NBA, with the Warriors being on the second night of a back to back after playing last night as well. The Warriors might miss Steph Curry, who is questionable.

Denver (3-4, 0-1 home) is playing pretty good basketball to start this season, especially considering that they only played once at home – where they are much more dangerous due to playing at high altitude. The Nuggets don`t have much talent in the team but play pretty decent together as a group. They have good energy and good chemistry. The hosts are coming after a 1 point loss at Memphis in their last game.

Golden State (6-2, 3-1 away) is facing a bit of criticism in the start of the season, as they were expected to destroy everybody after the addition of Kevin Durant. They did not quite do that and had a few off nights in which their defense and interior rim protection (their only weaknesses, along with the bench) looked horrible. Nevertheless, Golden State is playing great basketball and is coming after a big win against the Mavericks last night – though the Mavs missed 4 starters.

Team news: Denver continues to miss Will Barton, Wilson Chandler and Darrell Arthur. For the Warriors, Steph Curry had a minor ankle tweak last night but he came back at the end of the game. He is listed as day to day and I think there`s a good chance he will miss this game, considering it`s back to back away from home and that he always had ankle problems, so he needs to be careful with that.

Golden State is still a bit inconsistent in this start of the season, alternating fantastic performances with off nights. They lack defense and rim protection, so much depends on if the three point shot falls. However, Golden State is definitely one of the two best teams in the league and the criticism they suffer is only because the expectations are immense. Fact is that the Warriors are playing great basketball, some of the best in the NBA – just not yet at the level of destroying everybody by 25 points every night.

The biggest issue for the Warriors coming into this match (along with the injury status of Curry) is that they are back to back, after beating the Mavs last night. The last time Golden State was on the second night of a back to back, they were horrible and got embarrassed by the Lakers less than a week ago.

Golden State will probably be much more careful and focused this time, knowing what happened against the Lakers, but it`s still a back to back in one of the toughest places to play, the high altitude Denver – and against a team that always brings high energy, the kind of team that can pose problems to the Warriors. Denver actually did that last year, when in 4 matches they won once at home and went to an overtime away against the best regular season team of all time.

Not lastly, the possibility of Steph Curry missing is a serious danger for the Warriors. If he’s out, this will become a really difficult game for them and odds on Denver will plummet. Even if he plays, his minutes will probably be limited, but as a personal opinion I don`t think he will be risked, there`s no sense doing that.

It`s also worth noting that Golden State is 3 from 8 against the spread this season, while Denver is 5 from 7 (and 5 from 6 as an underdog). This means Denver covers the point spread much more often that Golden State this season.

Denver has a decent group that plays Ok together. They will probably not make the playoffs and are definitely far from the quality of Golden State, but they have a lot of energy and can challenge anybody in the NBA on a good night. They have fantastic interior presence with guys like Faried or Jokic who will get rebounds and bully Golden State.

My tip is Denver to cover the 7 point spread, the circumstances really seem to be in their favor tonight. Prediction: Denver Nuggets – Golden State Warriors 108 – 110.
