Schwartzman – Raonic

Schwartzman Raonic Miami prediction

Diego Schwartzman and Milos Raonic will square off on Sunday night in what should be a pretty interesting matchup in the third round at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami.

After a bye in the first round, Schwartzman made light work of Jarry in his first match here in Miami, defeating the Chilean 6-3 6-1 and playing good tennis. It was a good win for the Argentinean, as he did not play well so far in the Spring hard court season. Prior to Miami, Schwartzman lost in the second round at Acapulco (vs R. Harrison) and in his opening match at Indian Wells (vs Baghdatis) – both of those losses coming in straight sets.

Raonic hasn`t been fully fit in quite a while, but he seems to have made a return to form last week in Indian Wells, where he reached the semifinals. He beat an in form Querrey along the way before losing to eventual champion Del Potro. Raonic has brought the same level of play here in Miami, playing some excellent tennis to defeat Mikael Ymer 6-3 6-3 in the second round (after Milos had a bye in the first), albeit the opponent was rather average.

Raonic leads the H2H 1-0, claiming an easy win last year in Brisbane (hard courts) in the only previous meeting. A matchup analysis will reveal that this will be a nice clash of styles between the speedy baseliner Schwartzman and the big serving Raonic.

Schwartzman is definitely in a good moment of his career and he is fully able to produce upsets, including on hard courts. Earlier this year he reached the 4th round at the Australian Open, taking a set from Nadal before eventually losing to the Spaniard.

However, the Sunshine double Indian Wells – Miami has never been a good hunting ground for Schwartzman. He always struggled in these two events, posting a combined win-loss record of 2-8 during his career (including qualifying matches, and including his win over Jarry this week).

Schwartzman also doesn`t seem to be in his best form this month on hard courts, despite playing well a few days ago in that match against Jarry. To be honest, that wasn`t exactly very difficult opposition.

Raonic is obviously the better player here, and he is coming after a semifinal showing at IW in which he played some of his vintage tennis. He didn`t show any signs of slowing down here in a Miami, playing well in his previous match.

Odds on Raonic are plummeting and for good reason. The impression is that the bookies made a slight error here, and Milos should be priced lower.

Look for Schwartzman to be constantly under big pressure on his own serve to get the better of Raonic in rallies, as he won`t have many chances on the return. Eventually he should crack under that pressure, or Milos should simply get the better of him in a couple of Schwartzman service games.

My tip is Raonic to win and I recommend taking this bet early, as odds are likely to continue dropping. Prediction: Diego Schwartzman – Milos Raonic 5-7 4-6.
