England – Wales

England Wales Euro 2016 prediction

England and Wales will translate their Rugby rivalry into football, with the two Nations meeting for the first time in almost 5 years right on the big stage, at Euro 2016. England has 1 point, while Wales has three in a group with Slovakia and Russia.

England bottled it against Russia, being equalized in the 92nd meeting by what seams to be the weakest team in the Group. However, England played a really good match and their demise was mostly due to bad luck and Roy Hodgson’s tactics, who had Kane executing corners and did not give Vardy any minutes. England was very dangerous right from the start, playing with a high pace, as it was expected from this young, new look Three Lions team. They had a lot of chances and could have easily scored a couple of goals until finally Dier send a free kick into the net late on – before Russia got that lucky injury time equalizer.

Wales defeated Slovakia 2-1, a win which gains ever more value after we saw Slovakia toy with Russia on Wednesday. The Welsh side was really solid against a strong opponent – sure, that match could have easily ended with a draw, but when you have Gareth Bale in your team, you always stand the best chance of winning close matches. The Dragons played very well tactically, just as they did in the group stages, where they finished second just two points behind the highly fancied Belgium (which they beat in Cardiff).

Team news & lineups:

Neither side has any new injury concerns ahead of this game and they should be able to field their best lineups here.

England: Hart – Wakler, Smalling, Cahill, Rose – Alli, Dier, Lallana – Rooney – Kane, Vardy

Wales: Hennessey – Chester, Williams, Davies – Gunter, Ramsey, Allen, Ledley, Taylor – Bale, Robson-Kanu

Wales are not a team to be underestimated, this is a very solid side and proved it in the opening match of the group. The Welsh will try to frustrate England with their defensive play and rely on Bale to create havoc on the brake against a rather slow English defense.

However, I believe the Three Lions have enough to win this game. England played really well in the opening match and if they repeat that performance, they should get the three points. There is a lot of pace and talent up front for England and the Welsh will be exposed in one on one situations. If England manages to take the lead, they could build on it as Wales opens up, as England is at its best when it has spaces to exploit.

England needs a win and I believe they will get it. They are one of the best sides in this tournament, so my tip here is England to show their class and win with a 1 goal asian handicap. Prediction: England – Wales 2-0.
