Faroe – Romania

Adrian Mutu Romania Euro 2016

Romania seeks qualification to Euro 2016 as they need a win in Faroe to be certain of advancing to the finals. The hosts, however, have been a tough nut to crack so far and will aim to finish a historic campaign with a solid result. Romania will qualify with a win, as they are one point ahead of Hungary, which plays in Greece. Northern Ireland is already qualified.

Faroe Islands was very close to an upset a few days ago in Hungary, but they were left with their 6 points won against Greece, as Hungary managed to fight back for a key 2-1 win. Faroe is having an excellent campaign with 6 points so far, all of them against the out of form Greeks, but the Islanders were also very competitive in all matches and gave problems to all teams in the group, never losing by more than 2 goals – including a 0-1 in Romania.

Romania is undefeated in this Group, playing some good tactical football and staying solid on defense. The visitors started the campaign well and managed the key matches in 2015 well, but the latest 1-1 draw against Finland a few days ago highlighted some big problems for Romania. The visiting team was on the back of three consecutive 0-0 draws coming into the Finland match – not bad results, considering that all were against qualification rivals, but the match against Finland showed that Romania is really unable to score goals right now. In a crucial match at home, Romania missed a number of big chances but needed massive help from the referees and a 91st minute equalizer to remain a favorite for the second place. The goal conceded to Finland was only the second that Romania allowed in these qualies.

Lineups:

Faroe: Nielsen – Naes, Nattestad, Faero, Davidsen – Joensen, Balvindsson, Jakobsen, Vatnhamar, Bartalsstovu – Edmundsson

Romania: Tatarusanu – Matel, Chiriches, Grigore, Rat – Hoban, Pintilii – Torje, Budescu, Popa – Andone

Romania has been the definition of pragmatic football in these qualies. The current roster managed to beat the record for most minutes without scoring a goal in the nation’s history, going scoreless for almost 400 450 minutes until the lucky 91st minute equalizer against Finland a few days ago. Without too much quality, but benefiting from solid tactical consistency and an easy group, the visitors managed to stay undefeated, keep clean sheets and crawl their way towards Euro 2016. With qualification on the line, expect a very prudent display by Romania today, like usual, with a 1-0 win being the obvious objective.

Faroe Islands only took points against Greece in this group, but they were competitive in all matches and never lost by more than 2 goals. On the same note, Romania never won by more than 2 goals in this group. The hosts will produce their usual ultra-defensive game, while the visitors know that they don`t have any kind of firepower and will aim to keep a clean sheet while fighting for the winning goal over the 90 minutes. Faroe will very likely stay within 1 goal here, giving the Romanians a fight.

The last time Romania won by more than 2 goals in an official match was exactly 2 years ago against Andorra and they barely beat Faroe 1-0 at home in this campaign. I don`t thing Romania will allow Faroe a goal here, but they are unlikely to score more than 1 themselves. My tip is under 2,5 goals to be scored. Prediction: Faroe Islands – Romania 0-1.

  1. i think this is one of the weakest team in the history of romanian footbal. they also had until the goal of hoban the longest time without a goal scored , 429 minutes. i can t understan how some people can say they are solid when they are gardbage in a gardbage group.this is the only reason they can still qualify, the other teams are poor too..i also think they are not so solid in defense ,,other teams were not capable to put sone quality atack.but look at the finland s goal ant you well not see a solid defense…this pick of yours however makes sense,i think that this match will be a draw, but hungary will not win in greece

    • Of course Romania is a rubbish team right now. But they have been solid so far in doing the job. No loss, just two goals allowed. Does not matter who they faced, we are talking about Romania in this group, not in a match against Germany.

ps: thanks for getting the stats right, I was wrong with “almost 400 minutes”

  2. doing the job? don t you think if they had did the job they shoul have been qualified? 1-1 agains finland or 0 – 0 agains a shitty greece at home is not quoite like they did the job,but they that just me

    • I`m sure they wanted a 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland and Hungary. With Greece I believe they hoped for a 1-0, but were satisfied with 0-0. The Finland game was indeed inexcusable.

Please note that I am not defending Romania in any way, I am disgusted by this team. I am just speaking from their point of view. Their main objective until Finland was not to lose and they did that.

  3. We are a team that people will laugh if we get to Euro. I hope for 1-0 for Feroe and we not qualify. But Hungary is even badder, they will probably loose to Greece. A circus group

  4. If Romanians will play without Keseru and Stancu, they won””t beat Feroe.
As far as I am concerned, Romania does not deserve this qualification.
    Good luck! 🙂
