Federico Delbonis and Juan Monaco will square off this afternoon in the first round of the new Shenzhen ATP tournament. The surface is outdoor hard.
Delbonis had a decent year so far, but he has been rather inconsistent. The Argentinean got a couple of good results on clay (won Sao Paolo, final at Nice), but otherwise he usually exited in the first two rounds of tournaments, so he`s not really in top form right now. Delbonis did not win consecutive matches in his last 6 tournaments and is on the back of a second round exit at US Open (lost to Simon in 4 sets).
Monaco struggled this year to get back to form after some fitness problems and had a disappointing first part of the season, but lately he started to regain his rhythm and play closer to his best level. Monaco reached 1 final and 1 semifinal in his last three tournaments (at Gstaad and Kitzbuhel on clay) and his last outing was a 4 set defeat to Tsonga in the US Open first round.

Delbonis leads the H2H 1-0 and the only meeting was actually 3 months ago at Stuttgart (clay), with Federico easily winning 6-4 6-1. However, it was before Monaco started to play solid tennis. I`d say both are clay courters who can play very well on hard, so the surface does not really favor anyone – though the statistics would say Monaco has a way better record on these kind of courts.
Looking at the H2H and the statistics this year one might be inclined to think Delbonis has the first chance to win this, and you can see the odds dropping big time on Federico. However, my input is that Monaco is the guy to beat here. He is a better player than Delbonis when he is in form, and in the last 2 months he clearly showed improvements (which were expected to come with time). The short term form is in Monaco`s favor and if he keeps up this level he should find a way to beat Delbonis. Expect Juan to play consistent from the baseline and nullify the effect of Delbonis’ big shots, than take control of the points with his forehand. My tip is Monaco to win and I am very happy to pick him at these odds. It might be closer than I expect it to be (hopefully not), but Monaco should in it, hard or easy – the bookies knew what they were doing opening with Monaco at about 1.65. Prediction: Federico Delbonis – Juan Monaco 4-6 7-5 4-6.
