Verdasco – Murray

Fernando Verdasco Andy Murray betting previewFernando Verdasco meets Andy Murray for a place in the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The two players are on the back of two very different wins, but both will be confident of their chances to advance.

Verdasco really stepped up his game here in Paris. He did have some good results this year, looking to regain some of his old form, but I was reluctant about his improvement and expected him to lose against Gasquet in the 3rd round. It was not the case, as Verdasco played excellent tennis and routed the frenchman in 3 easy sets, despite the crowd support that Gasquet received. Indeed, Richard was not at his best, but Verdasco can be really happy with his performance. It was something else than in the 2nd round, when he was taken to 5 sets by a mediocre Cuevas.

It’s been a tough year for Andy Murray, recovering after a 3 month break caused by a back surgery late last year. The Brit struggled to find his game and it was not until Madrid 1 month ago that he played a really solid match, losing in 3 sets against Nadal. Clearly he`s improving but he`s still not even close to his absolute best level. Andy played pretty good in Paris but not exceptionally: he lost a set against Golubev and was really close of losing his 3rd round match against Kohlschreiber, a marathon that lasted over 4 hours, was played over the course of 2 days and finished with 12-10 for Andy in the deciding set.

Andy Murray leads the H2H 9-2, including winning the last 4 meetings, so Verdasco will have to overcome this complex if he is to stand a chance today. On the other hand, the two have never played on clay, a surface which clearly favors the spaniard.

This is a very interesting match betting wise, as both players have their advantages and disadvantages. Murray is the better player, clearly leads the H2H and plays very well against left handers. Verdasco is much better suited for clay, he looks to be the player on an uptrend here and he could take advantage of Andy’s marathon win over Kohlschreiber. Considering the odds, I reckon a bet on Verdasco is well worth taking here. If the two play like they did in the previous round then Verdasco has the edge, he was very impressive against Gasquet and with that kind of game he will surely put Murray under pressure. The Brit is still having problems on clay and if he gets just a little tired, than the spaniard will be there to capitalize. My tip is Verdasco to win. Prediction: Fernando Verdasco – Andy Murray 7-5 2-6 4-6 6-3 6-4.
