Manchester City will make their 2017 / 2018 Champions League debut away at Feyenoord, in a group which also features Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Feyenoord will return to the Champions League after no less than 15 years, having won their first Dutch title since 1999 last season – topping rivals Ajax by just one point. The hosts are seemingly continuing on the same note this season, as they won the Supercup via penalties against Vitesse, and went on to claim victory in each of the first 4 Eredivisie rounds (12-3 aggregate scoreline).
Manchester City is looking really good this year, at least so far. The Citizens are on the back of a 5-0 trashing of Liverpool, claiming 3 wins and 1 draw so far in the Premier League. There are high expectations for Guardiola’s team in the Champions League after City spent the staggering amount of 220M pounds on new sigings like Mendy (Monaco), Silva (Monaco), Walker (Spurs), Ederson (Benfica) or Danilo (Real Madrid).

Vermeer, van Beek, Nieuwkoop and Jorgensen are out for Feyenoord, while Haps is highly questionable. Manchester City will miss Kompany and Toure, while Gundogan will probably miss out as well. Guardiola might choose to make 2-3 changes to his usual lineup and the likes of Ederson or Aguero could be left on the bench.
Feyenoord: Jones – Diks, Van der Heijden, Nelom, Botteghin, St Juste – El Ahmadi, Toornstra, Vilhena – Berghuis, Kramer
Manchester City: Bravo – Walker, Otamendi, Stones, Mendy – Fernandinho – Sane, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling – Jesus
Manchester City had a poor season in UCL last year, failing to win a single game on the road in the group stages, and that cost them. Not only did they finish second in the group, drew Monaco in the first KO round, and lost – but they also found themselves needing points late on in the group, having to field their best team, something which affected their domestic campaign as well.
Manchester City should have learned their lesson from last season, and chances are they will treat this kind of matches with more focus early in the group. The projected lineup definitely suggests that, even if Aguero might not start.
Look for Feyenoord to put on a spirited performance, but their average defense will be a big problem against this City side, and the fact that Feyenoord misses a few crucial players will not help.
Look for City to start focus, trying to avoid last season’s fiasco, and their offense should be too strong for the hosts here. I don`t expect an upset, so my tip will be Manchester City to cover the -1 asian handicap. Prediction: Feyenoord – Manchester City 0-3.
Pick: Man City (-1 Asian Handicap)
