Greece – Bosnia

Greece and Bosnia Herzegovina are largely expected to fight for the second place in the World Cup qualifying Group H, where Belgium is expected to dominate, while Estonia, Cyprus and Gibraltar can not pose a threat.

Greece failed miserably in their attempt to qualify for Euro 2016, having a historically poor campaign and losing twice to the Faroe Islands. The Greeks bounced back though and have been solid under new head coach Michael Skibbe, winning all three matches in this qualifying group comfortably. Even if the opponents were Estonia, Cyprus and Gibraltar, the Greeks did the job professionally and played well. Greece is on the back of a 0-1 loss to Belarus in a friendly a few days ago, but they didn`t put much focus into that game.

Bosnia Herzegovina has also did the job against lesser opposition in this group, winning against both Cyprus and Estonia with a 7-0 combined goal difference, but they were soundly beaten by Belgium 0-4. Unlike Greece, they have not played a friendly prior to this match.

Even if Greece only did what they were supposed to do so far in this group, they will still be very happy with having 9 points after three rounds and I`m sure they will be very satisfied with a draw today – a result that would keep them 3 points ahead Bosnia. A loss would be catastrophic for Greece and would change morale from great to disastrous in a second, so that’s another reason for which I don`t expect them to push for a win.

Bosnia would be even more excited with a draw on the road against their main (and only) rivals for the second place in the group. Just like in Greece’s case, a defeat would be a disaster, as Bosnia would fall 6 points behind their opponents, so we can expect that they won`t take many risks either.

This is an evenly matched clash in which nobody can afford to lose and a draw would suit both sides very well, so I see no reason why we shouldn`t try the excellent odds for such a result.
