Tough season ahead for Freiburg after the excellent 5th place finish last year. Freiburg sold its best players in the transfer window and the results are a good indication of how much power this team lost. The hosts sit on the second to last place, no wins, just 2 points, 11 goals conceded. But make no mistake as Freiburg can still be a dangerous side at home, they proved it by holding Bayern Munchen to a 1-1 draw one month ago.
Freiburg played Slovan Liberec at home thursday in the Europa League, but they only gained a 2-2 draw. There could be problems for Freiburg here because they have no experience to play twice in three days in different competitions and they now have to face Hertha. The job is not made easier by the absences in the home camp: Mensur Mujdza, Vladimir Darida, Vegar Eggen Hedenstad and Marco Terrazzino are out, Pavel Krmas is highly questionable. After the player exodus in the summer, the hosts do not have sufficient depth to cover these absences.
It will be a hard task today for Freiburg with all this problems regarding form, injuries, morale and physical. Hertha is a very strong team. The visitors are on a two game losing streak but they were very unlucky to lose to Stuttgart last week. In the first half they had like 70% possession and they missed some huge scoring chances over the 90 minutes. Hertha is bullet proof tactically, they play really good football and will be a tough nut to crack this season for most Bundesliga sides. Besides this, the visitors have no squad problems, centre-back Langkamp being the only doubt – but he should play.
Hertha (currently 11th) can return to the top half of the table with a win here, or even with a draw, and this is something they can achieve. Freiburg is in a really bad spot and is playing clearly under the level of Hertha at the moment. Look for the visitors to take advantage of the hosts problems and get the three points, or at least a draw. It is hard to believe Freiburg can win this, even at home, there are no logical reasons for them to defeat Hertha today.
