All french second round match at Wimbledon, as Gael Monfils will hope to avoid an upset against the versatile Adrian Mannarino.
Monfils played a solid match in the first round, even though his opponent wasn’t exactly dangerous – but Gael avoided any unpleasant surprises and completed the job in three easy sets against Carreno Busta. The results and level of play came to confirm Gael’s good form on grass this season. The Frenchman reached the Stuttgart semifinals (lost to eventual winner Rafa Nadal) and the Halle quarterfinals, where he was forced to retire early against Andreas Seppi.
Mannarino had a mediocre campaign on grass so far. He did play a quarterfinal at Hertogenbosch, but his biggest scalp was Yen Hsun Lu – not exactly impressive. He lost to Mahut, Cilic and Bolelli. Mannarino needed 4 sets to defeat the aging Berrer in the first round here at SW19 – maybe not exactly the best start, but he did raise his level after losing the first set, so he will hope to take that into this match.

The two players never met before on tour. They are both versatile and possess great technique, both like to play on grass. Monfils is obviously the better player and also has a better serve to give him confidence and free points.
Monfils is looking really sharp right now and he shouldn’t have any surprises against Mannarino – a decent player in decent form, but nothing to shout about. Look for Gael to stay solid on serve and get opportunities on the Mannarino serve when he manages 2-3 solid returns in a game, or his opponent has an “off moment” – which happens often with Adrian.
Manarino could snatch a set, but that`s the most I see him obtaining against an inspired Gael, who is simply the better and the more in form player. My tip is Monfils to win and cover a 1,5 set handicap. The odds are decent so an 8 unit stake on this bet seems reasonable to me. All in all it`s a simple bet really. Normally I would say BA with -1,5 set HC, but I missed Paires 1th round match. I guess just (another) terrible match from Youzhny, but maybe I’m missing something.
I watched about 30 minutes of Youzhny – Paire, nothing surprising in that timespan, Youzhny was pretty bad. I do think Bautista can cover the spread, but I would be more comfortable with taking him to win straight in a combo. On the other hand the odds seem too low for the straight win.

I do, I was a little tired when I wrote the pick and this is why I wrote “likes to play” rather than “plays well”. Slipped my mind yesterday, I must admit.
I really don`t think it matters as long as his results on the surface are solid. Safin hated grass much more and he played semifinals here when he was waaaay past his best, Murray had clay as his “preferred” surface when he couldn`t buy a win on clay and the list can go on and on.
It`s good that you mentioned this, but I don’t think it has any impact on the bet.
