Gent – Wolfsburg

Gent Wolfsburg betting preview

Both Gent and Wolfsburg have definitely been happy with the Round 16 draw, but now it’s time to get the job done, as the two sides will fight to achieve a historic qualification to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Gent is currently tied with Club Brugge for the first place in the Pro League and are on the back of a 2-0 victory over Mouscroun – after previously losing twice to Club Brugge in the league and the Cup, both times 0-1.

Getting trough the group stage was a fantastic feat for Gent and the Belgian side definitely deserves a lot of credit, but they did need for the stars to align in order to achieve this performance. Luck was on their side, as they were drawn in the easiest UCL group, scored a 96th minute winner in Lyon, survived a 90 minute penalty which the same Lyon missed and met an already qualified Zenit team at home in the last match – making it much easier to claim the victory they needed.

Wolfsburg performed admirably in the Champions League so far, finishing first in a group with Manchester United, PSV and CSKA Moscow. However, Wolfsburg has been a huge disappointment domestically. They are just 8th in the Bundesliga, gaining just one point from their first three matches in 2016. On the bright side, the visitors ended that poor run over the weekend with a 2-0 home victory over Ingolstadt.

Team news & lineups:

Gent will miss Olayinka and Van der Bruggen, but Dejaegere and Simon are not sure they will play either, being doubtful. Wolfsburg has more problems, missing key players like Dost, Naldo, Benaglio and Guilavogui. Ascues is also out.

KAA Gent: Sels – Rafinha, Mitrovic, Nielsen – Foket, Milicevic, Kums, Neto, Dejaegere – Simon, Depoitre

Wolfsburg: Casteels – Jung, Knoche, Dante, Rodriguez – Gustavo, Arnold – Vieirinha, Caligiuri, Draxler – Kruse

The normal and logical bet here, as far as I`m concerned, is the draw. Both teams have things going for them. Gent plays at home, is healthier and is in better form, but they were lucky to reach this stage and Wolfsburg definitely has more quality and experience. There’s little separating these two ahead of this clash in Belgium.

I reckon a draw will be a satisfactory result for everybody, leaving qualification open to be settled in the reverse leg. Both sides have a fantastic chance to achieve a historic performance, so I don`t think anybody will take risks to win the game if it will be tied late on. My tip is the draw. Prediction: Gent – Wolfsburg 1-1.
