Gilles Simon will take on Kevin Anderson in the semifinals at ATP Queens, London, in what should be a very interesting clash of styles.
Simon had a pretty good season, so far, posting a 23-11 win-loss record and playing some good tennis at times. He’s not in top form, but he has been solid all year and started off in excellent fashion on grass, routing Goffin, Kokkinakis and Raonic to get this far in Queens. Gilles is not a grass court player by any means, but his smart aggressive, quick and fast play can be effective on the green when the Frenchman is in fine form – which is surely the case now.
Kevin Anderson was surely one of the players to watch this week. He had a thriller against Hewitt in the first round, saving match point, but followed that up with two solid performances against Wawrinka (7-6 7-6) and Garcia-Lopez (7-6 7-5). Very good serving by the big South African and it seems like Anderson is back in form, after not having the best season so far on the ATP Tour. Surely one of the reasons for his improvement must be the grass at Queens, a surface that suits his game very well.

The Head 2 Head is 1-0 for Anderson, a tight win on hard at Indian Wells 2013. Obviously that doesn`t say much and it will be interesting to see how Anderson’s big serve will work against Simon’s baseline play.
After the impressive win against Wawrinka, Anderson did show that he is human against Garcia-Lopez and he was very lucky to win it in two sets – saving set point in the first, break points in the second and converting his single break point. The South African is playing good tennis, no doubt about that, but he can play better. Simon is in very good shape himself and surely has more than a fighting chance today.
Gilles defeated Goffin and Raonic, with the Raonic win being particularly impressive. The Frenchman just got past a big server and that will help him a lot in this match, as he will be ready for Anderson’s bombs. The surface does suit Anderson better, but Simon can play very well on the green on his day and he proved it this week. I reckon Gilles will be able to sneak past the South African here, his excellent returning skills coupled with the experience from the Raonic match will help him put more pressure on Anderson that Garcia-Lopez and a shaky Wawrinka were able to do.
My tip is Gilles Simon to win, excellent odds for this bet. I did bet twice against Anderson this week, but I see this tip fully in its entirety, not as a way for revenge or chasing my Anderson losses. Prediction: Gilles Simon – Kevin Anderson 7-6 6-7 6-4.
