Warriors – Rockets

Warriors Rockets Game 6 handicapping

The Golden State Warriors will face elimination when they host the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference finals Game 6, but the Dubs will get a boost because Houston will be without Chris Paul.

The Warriors were up 2-1 less than a week ago and seemingly in complete control of the series, but they blew a double digit 4th quarter lead at home in Game 4 and allowed the Rockets back into it. After the narrow Game 4 loss, the Warriors lost another close one in Game 5, so now the Rockets are up 3-2 and will have two chances to qualify for the NBA finals.

The Rockets have been really special defensively lately, holding Golden State to under 100 points in both of the last two games. While most of that had to do with Golden State simply playing poorly, the Rockets do deserve a ton of credit. They were very physical on defense and forced the Warriors into ISO’ing Durant too much, which takes away from what makes them special.

Team news: Iguodala, who missed the last two games, is questionable again for the Warriors and chances are they`ll rest him for a potential Game 7. The big news is that the Rockets will be without Chris Paul, who sprained his hamstring in the last minute of Game 5.

The last two games have been low scoring, as both teams tightened up their defenses, and played physical basketball. However, Game 6 could be really different for a number of reasons.

First of all Chris Paul’s absence will change Houston’s approach, as he was arguably the main reason for their excellent defense in Games 4 and 5. He was a leader on defense, played tough and didn`t concede an inch. Without him, Houston (which is not usually a good defensive team) can`t be as effective at that end of the floor.

It must not be forgotten that for all the good defense that was played in the last two games, the two teams also missed a lot of wide open shots, which usually fall. They might fall in Game 6.

Both teams have an offensive DNA, and the low scoring trend is out of character for each of these two sides. A high scoring game is due, and without Chris Paul it becomes that much more likely. Even if he is a highly dangerous offensive weapon as well, his biggest impact has been on the defensive end, as previously explained.

Look for the Warriors to come out firing considering their desperate situation. They will also be frustrated after two narrow losses and after all the criticism, and will want to teach Houston a lesson while also building confidence for Game 7. Look for better movement and quicker shots for Golden State, which should translate to a high scoring total. Meanwhile, the Rockets are always capable to score in bunches themselves, so they should get their own.

I expect a faster pace in this Game 6 and my tip will be over 213 points to be scored. Earlier in the series the totals were around 227 points, so there is good value in taking the over 213 – as two low scoring games aren`t a reason to lower the line by 14-15 points. Prediction: Golden State Warriors – Houston Rockets 128 – 106.
