It doesn`t get much better than this in Swedish football. One of the biggest rivalries in the country, with the teams being side by side in the fight for the championship. Goteborg (3rd) is 4 points behind the leaders and AIK (4th) is 6 points behind the leader, both teams having a game in hand. Dropping points is not an option for either side so it`s a huge game between two of the most successful teams in the country.
Goteborg is finally relevant again in swedish football after some years of mediocrity. Led by captain and Allsvenskan topscorer Hysen (12 goals), the hosts have a great team this year. They have the second best defense and are always dangerous upfront with Hysen, while the midfield can be considered the best in the league. The team is very well balanced and they seem to be playing better every round. Goteborg is in great form at the moment with 6 wins in 7 games in all competition (5 for 6 in the league). The only loss came at leaders Malmo away from home (1-3), so it`s understandable.
AIK also has a great season so far, they have a good team as well. Their problem though is they lost their form at the worst possible moment, when the fight for the title is tighter than ever. In the last 4 games in all competitions AIK lost twice, made a draw and won only one game, against 12th placed Gefle at home.
Regarding team news, the only injury concern for Goteborg is defender Dyrestam, while AIK has a full strength squad. In the last years AIK had the upper hand in the derby, winning most of the encounters. The visitors will play another huge derby against Djurgarden three days after this one, but it`s fair to think they only have the Goteborg match in mind at the moment.
This will be a fiery and tense match, both teams have a lot to lose. It will be a balanced encounter between two evenly matched sides but you have to feel Goteborg will edge this one due to better form and home court advantage, two facts that are important enough to make the difference in their favor. The crowd will be absolutely electric and that should help the hosts a lot in a game like this one. My pick is something like 2-1 here.
