Jan Lennard Struff and Lucas Pouille will square off in the second round at the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart, played on grass.
Struff (53 ATP) is coming after a 6-4 7-6 win against Lukas Lacko, a good game for the German but not the most impressive result against an out of form, shaky player like Lacko. Struff had a pretty good clay court season for his standards in the last couple of months, but even so he entered Stuttgart on the back of 3 consecutive losses.
Pouille (16 ATP) had an excellent clay court season, which included winning the Budapest title, reaching the semifinals at the Monte Carlo Masters, and a 3rd round showing at Roland Garros (lost 2-3 to Ramos). The Frenchman now moves on grass and this will be his first match of the year on the surface, as he had a bye in the first round.

Both players have losing records on grass. Struff has a career 7-15 win-loss record on the surface. In the last two years he was 2-10 on the green!
As for Pouille, he has a 7-12 record on grass and was never known as a good grass court player, but that narrative turned by 180 degrees last year, when the Frenchman reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Pouille is a much better player than Struff, and he also showed more than the German on this surface, particularly with his Wimbledon quarterfinal last year.
Even if Struff has the advantage of already playing a match on grass this season, and he`s playing at home, he doesn`t seem to be in good enough form to challenge a superior, in form player, especially on this surface.
My tip is Pouille to win, I reckon this is a straightforward bet and deserves an 8 unit investment. Prediction: Jan-Lennard Struff – Lucas Pouille 6-7 3-6.
