Local favorite Jo Wilfried Tsonga takes on Spaniard Pablo Andujar in the Roland Garros third round.
Tsonga started the 2015 season at the end of March, previously nursing an injury that occurred at the end of last year. The frenchman is pretty far from his optimal level of play and, despite some decent matches here in there, he was unable to record any noteworthy performance. On the European clay he lost to Granollers, Goffin, Berdych and Cilic. His best wins were against Goffin and Sock and his best results were third rounds in Monte Carlo and Madrid. However, Tsonga looked much better this week in Paris, losing just 11 games in 2 matches – an impressive feat, even if he played against non factors like Sela and Lindell.
Andujar came back from the brink against Kohlschreiber, edging the German 3-2 in a great match. Andujar led 2-0 but lost that advantage and was trailing 2-4 in the deciding set when the match was interrupted due to darkness on Tuesday. He came back in top form Wednesday afternoon and won 4 out of 4 games to win the deciding set 6-4 against a stunned Kohlschreiber. It really was a solid match, with both players showcasing amazing tennis for most of the 5 sets.

The win came to confirm Andujar’s very good form this season on clay, he also played a solid match to defeat Ramos 3-0 in the opening round and is looking really solid. However, he has moments of letdown during matches and we also saw that against Kohli – with Pablo disintegrating in the 4th set and the start of the 5th, even though he was also forced to do so by an inspired Kohli.
Tsonga leads the Head 2 Head 1-0, an easy two set win in 2013 in Shanghai – but obviously the circumstances were different than and it was a hard court match. Clay favors Andujar and it will be an interesting matchup between his baseline smart aggressive game and Tsonga’s offensive style of tennis.
Andujar needs to be a bit more consistent than he was against Kohlschreiber or some other matches this season, but he stands a really good chance to upset Tsonga today – an easier opponent than Kohlschreiber right now as far as I`m concerned. The Frenchman looked great this week but he hasn`t faced any decent opponent and will find it much more difficult against Andujar. The Spaniard played better tennis than Tsonga coming into this tournament and I feel that a rusty Jo Wilfried will have issues getting past Andujar’s solid baseline play.
My tip is Pablo Andujar to win this one. Personally I wouldn’t take a game or a set handicap, it could be a little risky to go with high stakes on such a bet – as Tsonga, if he plays his best tennis consistently and wins, could win it rather clearly. But that looks unlikely to happen. Prediction: Jo Wilfried Tsonga – Pablo Andujar 6-1 4-6 4-6 6-3 5-7.
