Isner – Lopez

John Isner takes on grass court expert Feliciano Lopez in the second round at the ATP 500 event in Queens, London.

John Isner has been in solid form for most part of this year, certainly better than his horrible 2014. Big John regained his best level of tennis and is now entering his favorite part of the year, the grass court season and especially the US hard court season which follows. Isner played his first grass court match of the season in the first round here at Queens and did not have too many problems in defeating Jared Donaldson 2-0, only facing a single break point – which he saved.

Lopez also held serve for his entire first round match against Joao Sousa, an easy 6-3 6-4 win. Lopez is one of the few grass court experts left in the game and had a magnificent season on the green last year, winning tournaments, reaching finals and breaking all kind of service records, being virtually impossible to break. However, he didn`t start the grass court swing too well this year, losing to Groth last week in the first round at Stuttgart. On the bright side he wasn`t broken in that match either!

The Head 2 Head is 3-2 for Feliciano Lopez (1-0 on grass). The only meeting on the green took part last year at Wimbledon and it was a tiebreak festival – a 6-7 7-6 7-6 7-5 victory for Feliciano in a match that featured a single break of serve!

Both guys are big servers – Isner with arguably the best serve in the game and Lopez with a massive one himself, plus the ability to finish it off at the net or with the forehand. Both are in excellent form on their first ball, having held serve for all their combined three matches on grass this season. If we also look at their meeting at Wimbledon last season, it really looks likely that at least a couple of tiebreaks will occur.

Look for both players to start strong on serve and we shouldn`t see anybody having problems keeping it in the first set, until maybe fatigue and pressure comes up later on in the match. My tip is a first set tiebreak. The bookies felt the danger here and didn`t provide us with the usual very high odds for this bet, but the price is fair and surely worth taking with moderately high stakes. Prediction: John Isner – Feliciano Lopez 6-7 7-6 4-6.
