Del Potro – Thiem

Del Potro Thiem betting preview

Juan Martin Del Potro will play against Dominic Thiem in what is expected to be a very interesting fourth round clash at the 2017 US Open.

Del Potro wasn`t particularly great pre – US Open and had a rather mediocre year for his standards, never being quite fully healthy for long periods of time. Nevertheless, Delpo seems to have found his rhythm here at Flushing Meadows, as he hasn`t lost a set so far and looked particularly impressive in the previous round against the in form Bautista Agut. Del Potro won that match 6-3 6-3 6-4 and was never in any kind of danger.

Dominic Thiem had a stellar first part of the season, particularly on the European clay, where he often looked like the second best player in the world behind Rafa Nadal. However, Thiem hasn`t been the same after Roland Garros, which has not been necessarily surprising given the fact that he doesn`t like fast surfaces as much as clay. Thiem’s best result in the last couple of months on the American hard courts was a third round showing at Cincinnati (lost 0-2 vs Ferrer), but he bettered that with this 4th round showing in New York. Thiem got past De Minaur, Fritz and Mannarino, losing a single set along the way.

Del Potro leads the H2H 2-0 and has not lost a set against Thiem so far. The last meeting (and the only one on hard) took place here at the US Open last year, with Thiem retiring down 3-6 2-3. While Thiem is an all rounder who can definitely play on hard, he is not at the same level on this surface as on clay, while Del Potro is a natural – so the courts here in New York should represent an advantage for him.

Even if Dominic Thiem lost a single set so far, that statistic doesn`t quite tell the whole story. The Austrian could have lost some more sets along the way, with his last two matches against Fritz and Mannarino being a grind, sets being decided by a couple of points here and there.

Thiem did not seem particularly at the height of his powers so far, he continues to look vulnerable on hard courts and the feeling is that he will capitulate against the first classy opponent he meets. Right now, Del Potro is looking like that kind of opponent.

Delpo had easy opposition in the first two rounds but the way he dismantled Bautista Agut in the 3rd round was remarkable. Bautista couldn`t force errors from Delpo and eventually looked worn down by the power game of the Argentinean.

The match against Bautista will be an advantage for Del Potro coming into this clash, as Thiem will have a similar approach with the Spaniard, trying to force errors from Juan Martin. Playing Bautista last round should make Delpo feel more comfortable with Thiem’s style.

The fitness / stamina of Del Potro remains a concern as he attempts to win 4 consecutive matches for the first time this year, but he didn`t show any signs of injury or fatigue in the last round, or in any match in the last few months. Delpo seems back close to his best and knows he has a massive chance to reach the final here.

I`m relying on Del Potro to stay consistent, the tennis he is playing is superior to Thiem’s and the logical bet is backing him to claim victory here. Look for Thiem to have problems dealing with Delpo’s power, just like Bautista did in the previous round. My tip is Del Potro to win and I think an 8 unit stake is warranted according to my analysis. Prediction: Juan Martin Del Potro – Dominic Thiem 6-4 3-6 7-6 6-4.
