Melzer – Verdasco

Jurgen Melzer Fernando Verdasco betting previewTwo fine grass court players will meet in the Hertogenbosch quarterfinals, we can expect some decent tennis to be played in this one.

Long gone are the times when Jurgen Melzer was competing in Grand Slam quarters or semifinals. Dropped out of the top 50, Melzer will attempt to win 3 consecutive matches for the first time in 10 months (!!), which pretty much sums up his form, both short and long term. The Austrian played a poor match last week in London, losing to Daniel Evans, but he increased his level a little bit to reach the Hertogenbosch quarterfinals. Still, winning against a tired Falla and edging a 3 setter against Lacko are not exactly world beating results.

Verdasco is in good form at the moment, playing great tennis: he reached the 4th round at Roland Garros in his last tournament and was pretty good in his first competition on grass here in Hertogenbosch as well. He needed 3 sets to get past a solid Mathieu in the first round, but was better in the next match, easily dispatching Huta Galung. Since he reached the quarters, we can safely assume that right now Fernando is motivated to win the tournament, and he also got 2 grass court matches under his belt, so the spaniard should be stronger than in the previous rounds.

Fernando Verdasco leads the H2H 6-2, but the two have not played since 2011 and never met on grass. Both have stles of plays which are suited for the green and can play good tennis on the surface.

Melzer is already 33 years old and it’s getting pretty clear that he will never comeback anywhere close to the level he was 3-4 years ago. I doubt he will manage to get 3 consecutive wins for the first time in 10 months today. Verdasco is the better player, he`s at another level than Melzer, especially this year, and he looked more sharp than the Austrian in Hertogenbosch as well. Expect Verdasco to come out motivated and play his best match of the week today, after adjusting to the surface in the first two rounds. Fernando should be able to hold serve, move Melzer around and force errors from the inconsistent Austrian. The odds on the spaniard (which are dropping) might not be too high, but even so I reckon there`s some value in this bet. My tip is Verdasco to win. Prediction: Jurgen Melzer – Fernando Verdasco 6-7 2-6.
