Karolina Pliskova will square off against home favorite Coco Vandeweghe in the US Open QF`s, with Pliskova set to retain her World No.1 ranking if she reaches the last act at this event.
At this point Pliskova is considered the clear cut favorite to win the whole thing, but fact is the didn`t have the most straighforward run to the quarterfinals, and showed some weaknesses along the way. She struggled particularly in the 2nd and 4rd rounds against Gibbs and Zhang, winning close three setters against both those players – and even saving a match point against Zhang. On the bright side, Pliskova played her best match of the tournament in the previous round, demolishing the young Jennifer Brady 6-1 6-0.
Coco Vandeweghe had a similar progress to Pliskova, losing two sets in her road to the quarterfinals (Riske, Radwanska) and probabably playing her best tennis in the 4th round, where she defeated Lucie Safarova, 6-4 7-6. This has been a breakout year for Vandeweghe who finally found some consistency in her game and was able to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals (Australian Open, Wimbledon and here at the US Open).

Both players are big, aggressive hitters and both like hard courts, so a matchup analysis will not say much. There is no big contrast in styles, so the more in form player should win on the day.
This has the makings of a classic three setter, as neither player has seemed consistent enough to be expected to dominate the other for the entire match. Both Pliskova and Vandeweghe play a high risk brand of tennis, so it`s reasonable to expect each of them to have stretches of great tennis and domination, as well as stretches in which their shots won`t always go in.
I can see this going back and forth with the two players alternating the moments of control, and being settled in a decider, so I think the best bet is the over. The line at 22 points is not too high at all, particularly considering that these are two of the best servers on the Women’s tour, and played a tiebreak in each of their last three meetings. The over can realistically be covered in two sets as well, or at least voided.
It has to be noted that all four H2H meetings ended up in straight sets, but I don`t think that holds much relevance. Also, 2 of the 4 meetings did end up with more than 22 games.
All in all, my tip on this clash is over 22 total games to be played. The line is apparently moving towards 22,5 at the moment. I was thinking 7 or 8 units on this pick, and after making my analysis I decided to push it with 8. Prediction: Karolina Pliskova – Coco Vandeweghe 7-6 2-6 6-4.
