The big question about Wawrinka coming into Queens was if he will be okay mentally and physically after the Roland Garros win – and the Swiss answered those questions in style with a blowout win over Nick Kyrgios in the first round, playing some great tennis against a very dangerous opponent. We now know that Wawrinka is ready and focused for this tournament, so we should expect him to keep up the same intensity and high level of play.

The Head 2 Head record is very interesting here. It`s tied at 3-3, but Anderson won the last three meetings, all of them last year. This will be the first meeting on grass between the two and both players like the surface.
If this was the first round I would stay away, but after Wawrinka proved that he is ready to go, I`m all over him. The Head 2 Head is a little worrying with Anderson winning all three meetings last year, but obviously circumstances are different – Wawrinka is in much better form, while the South African is not at the same level he was last year. There`s also the fact that Stan played Kyrgios, a big server and similar player to Anderson – this will give him an edge coming into this match.
Anderson clearly needs his “A game” to stay competitive against this red hot Wawrinka, but he was rarely able to produce his best level lately. My tip is Wawrinka to win and cover the 2,5 game handicap. He should be able to break Anderson at least once here. Even if Anderson snatches a tiebreak (which I don`t believe), Stan will still be in a good position to cover this handicap. Prediction: Kevin Anderson – Stan Wawrinka 6-7 4-6.

it’s always tricky to bet on the winner of a GS, in the first tournament right after, but it seems Wawrinka played well, despite losing. a tie-break loss vs a big serve guy like Anderson is always a possiblity, especially on grass.
that`s for sure, but his performance in the first match suggested he doesn`t suffer from hangover. unfortunately anderson played better than expected, he deserved the win.
