Leicester – Tottenham

Jamie Vardy Leicester snow

Midweek football on offer in the Premier League, and one of the highlights of the round will be Leicester taking on Tottenham at King Power Stadium.

Leicester has done reasonably well since Claude Puel took over a few weeks ago, amassing a record of 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss under his reign – with the sole defeat coming at the hands of Manchester City. The hosts are currently on the 12th place in the standings and need points to avoid dropping in the danger zone. They will fancy their chances to get something against a Tottenham side which hasn`t played well in the last few rounds.

Despite winning 2-1 in Dortmund last week in the Champions League, Tottenham has struggled domestically recently. In the last three rounds they barely beat last placed Crystal Palace at home, they were outclassed by Arsenal, losing 0-2 in the North London derby, and were held to a 1-1 home draw by West Brom last weekend. As such, Spurs have currently dropped out of the Top 4.

Team news & lineups:

Tottenham misses center back Huth and holding midfielder James. Spurs will miss center back Alderweireld and holding midfielder Wanyama, while holding midfielder Winks is questionable.

Leicester City: Schmeichel – Simpson, Morgan, Maguire, Fuchs – Albrighton, Ndidi, Iborra, Grey – Mahrez, Vardy

Tottenham: Lloris – Sanchez, Dier, Vertonghen – Aurier, Sissoko, Alli, Dembele, Rose – Eriksen – Kane

Leicester has been pretty generous with goals this season and their approach hasn`t changed under Claude Puel. The Foxes have a 17-19 goal difference in 13 matches, which means an average of 2.77 goals is being scored in their games.

Tottenham might not be the most offensive oriented team in the Premier League, but they can definitely score goals, and their matches on the road have been more entertaining than the ones in London (Tottenham has a goal difference of 12-5 in six away matches). Spurs need a win, so you would expect them to approach this game in a pretty offensive manner, especially as Leicester will intentionally concede possession in order to focus on their famous counterattacks.

Last seasons the two results between Tottenham and Leicester were 6-1 and 1-1, and historically these two sides always played high scoring matches since Leicester got promoted in 2014. This might suggest a matchup favorable for entertaining football and goals.

This looks like a game which could see the ball in the net a few times – based not just on stats, but also on common sense. The fact that both sides miss players from their usual defensive setups is a key factor which accentuates the idea that goals could be on the cards.

Leicester at home should speculate Tottenham`s shaky form and their defensive missings, particularly on counter attacks, where Alderweireld’s and Wanyama’s (key piece in stopping counters) absences might prove very important for the Spurs. Fact is that the Foxes scored in all but three games this season (all competitions).

On the other hand, Leicester’s defense is not good enough to expect a clean sheet against a strong side like the Spurs, particularly with Tottenham being very keen to win the match. Spurs themselves also failed to score in just three matches in all competitions all season.

My tip here will be both teams to score. Prediction: Leicester City – Tottenham 1-2.
