Malaga – Gijon

Guillermo Ochoa Malaga

Friday night football in Primera Division, as Malaga and Sporting Gijon will open up the 29th round of the Spanish La Liga.

Malaga failed to win any of their last 5 matches, but the team did not play poor football. Malaga had a difficuld draw, losing tight matches with Villarreal and Valencia but also drawing with Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and most recently with Deportivo – 3-3 on the road in the last round. The hosts are sitting on the 12th place, safe from relegation but without any chances to play in Europe next season, so they don`t have much left to fight for.

Gijon will definitely be the more motivated side coming into this match, as the visitors are second to last in La Liga, 2 points behind safety. Gijon lost three consecutive matches and hasn’t won a game in the last 7 outings. Defense has been a big problem lately for this team, who conceded an average of over 2 goals per game in these last 7 matches. Gijon is on the back of a 0-2 home defeat against Athletic Bilbao.

Team news & lineups:

Cop, Santa Cruz, Kameni and Camacho will not be in Malaga’s lineup. Gijon will have to do without the serices of Cases, Vranjes, Bernardo and possibly Rachid.

Malaga: Ochoa – Rosales, Weligton, Albentosa, Torres – Juanpi, Recio, Fornals, Castro – Uche, Charles

Sporting Gijon: Cuellar – Lora, Hernandez, Mere, Canella – Alvarez, Mascarell – Ndi, Halilovic, Jony – Sanabria

Malaga’s odds might not seem too high at about 1.55, but I feel there’s actually some value to be taken here. Malaga’s recent results are misleading, as they had a nightmare schedule and played pretty well.

Generally a defensive team, Malaga has been in good goalscoring form recently and should be able to exploit Gijon’s weaknesses in defense, banging in a couple of goals. On the other hand Malaga has been surprisingly leaky at the back recently. I reckon they worked in training to improve this, especially after last week’s 3-3 draw with Deportivo. I can see them reverting back to their solid defending, not allowing Gijon many opportunities.

I will place a simple bet here, with reasonable stakes: my tip is Malaga to win. Even if Sporing Gijon has much more to fight for, I`m sure Malaga will be eager to claim a victory after 5 winless games and they have a very good chance of doing it at home against an inferior opponent. Prediction: Malaga – Sporting Gijon 2-0.
