The Romanian / Indian couple of Mergea and Bopanna will square off against the Dutch / Romanian couple of Rojer and Tecau. This is a very interesting doubles semifinal clash at Wimbledon, as Mergea and Tecau played doubles together in juniors (won Wimbledon twice) and in their early careers, before the relation between them got cold. They still play in Davis Cup though and this chemistry / matchup between them could be the deciding factor in the match, as you might see.
Mergea and Bopanna only started playing together a few months ago, but they immediately clicked and got some excellent results, including winning the Madrid Masters. They played some good tennis this week and defeated the Bryan brothers in the previous round 3-1, but it wasn`t really such a huge surprise – they like to play on grass and they defeated the Bryan brothers earlier in the year as well.
Roger and Tecau played some very solid, consistent tennis this year and they are one of the top pairs in a row. They have been very and even though they haven`t managed to get over that final hurdle and win / play finals in Major tournaments, they did play semmis in all three Grand Slams so far this season. Grass is their favorite surface, providing perfect conditions for their powerful games with big serves and consistent net play. Tecau and Rojer lost 2 sets in the second round, but won all the other matches 3-0, including an impressive victory over Matkovski / Zimonjic last round. Tecau played 3 consecutive Wimbledon finals in 2010-2012 with Lindstedt, but lost them all.

The Head 2 Head between the two teams, but particularly between Mergea and Tecau, is almost unbelievable and I fancy it to be the deciding factor here. Horia Tecau leads the Head 2 Head against Florin Mergea 7-1 and won the last 7 meetings, including all 4 played this year! Between Rojer/Tecau and Mergea/Boppana the Head 2 Head is 2-0. Clearly Mergea has a big issue playing Tecau and this is not a good sign, as Mergea is known to be a headcase and collapse mentally – this, along with the clash in styles, allows Tecau to keep defeating him even when he seems to be the underdog.
Bookies knew why they opened with as low as 1.60 for Rojer and Tecau, but the odds skyrocketed because of the general public – and I don`t think that the majority of the general public knows about this huge matchup issue of Mergea against Tecau.
Looking at the results of the two teams at Wimbledon, they have been pretty similar and the two teams played at pretty much the same level. Mergea and Bopanna had better success prior to SW19, winning at Stuttgart and reaching the final in Halle, while Rojer / Tecau lost in the semifinals of both their preparation tournaments. However, this will be a different match on a different stage.
Doubles will always be more unpredictable and Bopanna / Mergea are playing great, surely standing a chance today. But the Head 2 Head is just too huge to ignore here. It wouldn`t be the first time Mergea lost to Tecau after beating the Bryan brothers and looking at the excellent form of Rojer / Tecau, their superior experience and Tecau’s matchup advantage, I expect them to win against Mergea / Bopanna again. This particular H2H factor surely gives us an advantage over the bookies, as the initial odds were the correct ones, at 1.65. My tip is Rojer / Tecau to win. Prediction: Mergea / Bopanna – Rojer / Tecau 4-6 6-3 6-7 5-7.
