Mergea/Bop – Roj/Tecau

Florin Mergea Horia Tecau Head 2 Head

Florin Mergea and Rohan Bopanna will aim to upset Jean Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the ATP World Tour doubles final, but Florin Mergea will be aware of his abysmal Head 2 Head record against Tecau. Rojer and Tecau will also be pumped up after booking the year end number 1 spot with their semifinal win against the Bryans.

Mergea and Bopanna reached the World Tour finals despite not playing together in the first few months of the year. Since becoming a team, the two players were excellent and posted some fantastic results throughout the year, including here in London. Mergea / Bopanna are well desirving of their place in the final, winning 3 out of their 4 matches 2:0 and only losing in the last group game againt Bolelli / Fognini, when the first place finish was already booked. The excellent results and great tennis played are not a surprise really, as Bopanna is a well known doubles specialist and Mergea, who has tons of talent, was clearly on the rise since last year. Also, Bopanna’s serve & volley works perfectly with Mergea’s style, which is very solid from the baseline and includes flashes of genius.

Rojer / Tecau won their first Grand Slam title this year at Wimbledon and they were truly unstoppable here in London, winning all their matches in straight sets and losing serve just 4 times – once in each encounter. They are on the back of a 6-4 6-4 semifinal win against the Bryans, another clinical performance which also booked the year end number one for Rojer / Tecau. The two will be confident of finishing the season with a win considering their record against Bopanna / Mergea and particularly Tecau’s record against Mergea.

Bet on Mergea / Bopanna – Rojer / Tecau @ World Tur finals with high odds at 1xBet.

The two teams met three times, all meetings this year obviously and Rojer / Tecau lead the H2H 3-0. All wins were very tight, needing a deciding set, but in all matches Mergea / Bopanna were seemingly playing better coming into the meeting – which is not the case this time.

However, the most important fact about this game is the story and the Head 2 Head between Mergea and Tecau. The two Romanians were star junior players and teamed together for doubles, winning Wimbledon and playing some incredible Davis Cup matches as teenagers. They had a falling out, Tecau specialized on doubles and started having great success, while Mergea fell into anonymity and even quit tennis for a year. He came back a couple of years ago, focused on doubles and finally started to show what he is capable off. But he has never been able to pass over the Tecau hurdle.

Horia Tecau won the last 8 meetings against Florin Mergea (4 of them this year) and leads the overall Head 2 Head against his former teammate 8-1. Florin Mergea is a known headcase and it’s pretty obvious that his problem with Tecau is psychological. I remember a number of meetings between them when Tecau’s team was playing rubbish, Mergea’s team was on fire, leading the game and suddenly Mergea started blowing errors all over the place. This happened more than just once or twice. Mergea obviously has an issue with Tecau and his morale won`t get any better today given the fact that he lost against very tight matches against Tecau in the last two meetings, both at Grand Slams and with Mergea / Bopanna playing perfect tennis.

Knowing these two players, I can even take the risk to say that Mergea will never defeat Tecau. Obviously there`s no guarantees about that, they are not alone on the court and the future can hold surprises. But today, with Rojer / Tecau playing so well and having so much confidence, I really can`t see them blowing this. Expect another confident serving performance from Rojer / Tecau and they should be able to find chances on the opposing serve, as Mergea doesn`t have the strongest first delivery, while Bopanna’s second serve is rather poor. They are also slightly more competent on indoor hard, so my tip is Jean Julien Rojer / Horia Tecau to win. Prediction: Bopanna / Mergea – Rojer / Tecau 6-7 4-6.

  1. Totally agree with you.. had an outright on Rojer/Tecau on 6.00 from bet365 pre-tournament..

  2. Funny thing is that the final is perfect for me as it is the team with the worst match-up advantage

  3. I remember some Isner/Querrey bet on doubles with ten units back in the day

  4. I choose over games for this match…
    Good luck! 🙂
