Zverev – Federer

Mischa Zverev Roger Federer Wimbledon betting preview

Mischa Zverev and Roger Federer will square off for the third time this year, in the Wimbledon third round, as the German will attempt to at least win his first ever set against Roger.

Zverev had a great season so far and it`s safe to say it was a breakout year for him. The 30 year old German has broken the Top 30 for the first time in his career and he had a very good run on grass as well in the past few weeks. His serve & volley game is perfectly suited for the green surface, so it`s not surprising he won 7 of the 10 matches he played on grass this year. Here at Wimbledon he defeated Tomic (3-0) and Kukushkin (3-2).

Federer came back on tour after skipping the clay court season, as he chose to do that specifically to be fully rested on the grass. He opened his campaign on the green with a shock loss against Haas, but he quickly got back on track and won his next 7 matches in straight sets – including here at Wimbledon against Dolgopolov (6-3 3-0 ret.) and Lajovic (7-6 6-3 6-2). Fed is obviously in excellent form and is looking like the clear cut favorite to win yet another title at SW19.

Federer leads the H2H 4-0 (2-0 on grass) and he has a massive matchup advantage over Zverev, as he does against all serve & volleyers. Zverev has not won a single set against Federer and at one point 4 years ago Federer beat him 6-0 6-0, on grass! The pair already met twice this year: once at the Australian Open, where Zverev was powerless despite playing the tennis of his life, and last time just a few weeks ago in Halle – with Roger winning 7-6 6-4.

No matter the circumstances, Zverev just couldn`t get close to taking a set from Federer – not when he was playing the tennis of his life, not when Federer was rusty. Not on grass, not on clay, not on hard. Even the two tiebreaks they played in 9 sets of tennis were one sided. The Swiss has eaten serve & volley players for lunch his entire career, and the Head 2 Head record he has against Zverev is no fluke.

That recent meeting in Halle was the closest Zverev ever came to challenge Federer. But it was only Federer’s third match of the year on the green, while Zverev was in excellent rhythm. Even so, Zverev failed to earn a single break point in that clash.

Mischa Zverev is a solid, consistent player and he is in quite good form right now, but he is kind of limited. You generally know what to expect from the German, which often makes him a good option to bet on or against. It also makes it extremely difficult for him to play against Federer, as previously stated, so backing the Swiss Maestro to earn a clear victory makes a lot of sense.

Also worth noting is the fact that with all the beatings Zverev suffered at the hands of Federer, including lately, you would expect his confidence to be shot ahead of this match. A legitimate question can be raised if Zverev truly believes he can pose a challenger here, at Wimbledon, the absolute worst place you can meet Federer at, and where his legend shines brightest.

It`s hard to see Roger losing a set here aside from Zverev lucking out in a tiebreak (chances are there could well be one), or Fed having 1 or 2 miserable service games in a set where Zverev manages to hang on to his own serve (which is unlikely considering the way Fed is playing).

I expect Federer to win in straight sets. Odds ~ 1.45 are not very exciting and at one point I thought about avoiding the bet, but you can`t realistically ask for more considering the H2H between the two players. Chances for Zverev to win a set seem even lower than the odds suggest when you take everything into account.

My tip is 3 sets to be played, because William Hill has an amazing price for this bet compared to the rest of the market. If you can`t bet this with Will Hill, I`d take Federer -2,5 sets (3:0) at anything above 1.40. Prediction: Mischa Zverev – Roger Federer 6-7 3-6 4-6.
