Montanes – Thiem

Montanes Thiem betting previewHome boy Dominic Thiem, 19 years old, got a wildcard in this tournament and did well to earn a quarter final spot against hot spaniard Montanes.

Thiem is a big hope for Austrian tennis from some time but he hasn`t yet had the progress people expected of him. He still has time, but this year he has stagnated, still not managing to break top 250 ATP. He played futures finals, semifinals, nothing special from his part until this week, when he managed to defeat Andrey Kuznetsov and Melzer in two sets. Of course, he raised his level of play and this is a good performance for him, but objectively it`s not a big achievement to beat Kuznetsov, while Melzer didn`t play a game since Wimbledon and in these days he`s capable of losing to anyone on the tour if the “gods” don`t favor him.

Montanes will be a completely different task for Thiem. The Spaniard is in fantastic form this season. He won Nice on clay, last week he reached quarters at Umag, losing to Monfils after a brilliant match, after he defeated Gasquet 6-4 6-4 in the second round. Here at Kitzbuhel Albert continued his good form, easily dispatching Ungur before edging red-hot Hanescu in a third set tiebreak.

As expected, this is the first meeting between the two.

Thiem likes the red dirt, but he is not a pure clay court player like Montanes, so Albert has the advantage regarding the surface. Dominic plays at home but that counts only to a certain limit. This is the last ATP clay court tournament of the season, so Montanes will try to gain as much as he can before moving to the unfriendly hard courts.

Albert is a very consistent player, rarely makes mistakes, and that should help him a lot against this young and inexperienced opponent. For sure Thiem will crack under pressure when the big points will be played. A safe and decent game will be enough for Montanes to put this one in the bag, as his opponent is not able to limit his unforced errors at this point in his career.

There is a huge difference in quality, long term form and ability on the surface between these two players and the Spaniard should make light work of Thiem. Something like 6-3 6-4 is expected and I`ll go with Albert to win in straight sets.
