Olympiakos – Anderlecht

Olympiakos Gate 7

Anderlecht will come into this Europa League Last 32 second leg in Greece holding a crucial 1-0 advantage, but the Belgian side will know that the result is not what they deserved.

Olympiakos was the better team last week, holding no less than 61% possession on the road and having more chances to score than Anderlecht. All this while Anderlecht’s goal came in the 70th minute, so it’s not like Oly was chasing all night to get back into the match. Incredibly, it was only the 5th defeat suffered by Olympiakos all season, 3 of those coming at the hands of Bayern Munich and Arsenal. The Greeks are having a great season, leading the league by 18 points with a 21-1-1 statline and putting in some great performances in Europe as well. Olympiakos defeated Atromitos 4-0 over the weekend, despite resting a number of key players in perspective of this clash with Anderlecht.

The visitors were unable to back up the win against Olympiakos as they fell 0-1 to Beveren over the weekend. Anderlecht rotated the squad a bit, but not too much and the result was very disappointing – putting a huge dent in Anderlecht’s title chances, as they are now on the third place, 7 points behind leaders Club Brugge. It has been a so and so season so far for Anderlecht and the visitors are definitely underdogs coming into this match. They also have a huge match vs. Standard coming up, so traveling to Greece comes as a scheduling nightmare.

Team news & lineups:

Defour will probably not play for Anderlecht, as he`s not fit and is expected to be rested for the Standard match. Coach Silva of Olympiakos said that he will think long and hard before naming the lineup, as a couple of positions see important players battling for a spot.

Olympiakos: Roberto – Masuaku, Siovas, Botia, Elabdellaoui – Milivojevic, Cambiasso – Dominguez, Fortounis, Durmaz – Ideye

Anderlecht: Proto – Najar, Mbodji, Deschart, Buttner – Tielemans, Badji – Praet, Duricic, Acheampong – Okaka

I was proven wrong after tipping Olympiakos not to lose in the first leg, but in all honesty they were very unlucky to end up on the losing side of that. This is one of the best sides Olympiakos had in the last decade and it would be a massive upset if they were to be knocked out by an Anderlecht side which is decent, but really nothing special.

After clearly dominating the first leg and holding more than 60% possession on the road, you have to expect Olympiakos to be all over the Belgians today. We all know how strong Oly is at home and they have all the arguments to claim victory in this match. Look for them to put pressure from the start, stay safe at the back and find the winning goals sooner or later.

My tip on this encounter will be Olympiakos to win, which seems an even safer bet considering the fact that Anderlecht would be delighted with a 1-2 or 2-3 defeat. I do expect Olympiakos to qualify, but I will choose the safe bet with higher stakes. Odds are going down and I expect the trend to continue. Prediction: Olympiakos – Anderlecht 3-0.

  1. I like this bet. In the first leg, Anderlecht was very lucky with the big GK mistake. They were dominated overall, posession, corners…
Oly should get the win, but i am not sure about qualification.

    • Yep, Oly was so dominant and unlucky in the first leg, they are also obviously the better team. Now all that remains is for them to perform at their usual level today. At home, I think they will.
