Olympiakos – Malmo

Olympiakos hosts Malmo in the last round of the Champions League Group E. The mathematics for qualification is interesting: If Malmo wins they get 3rd place and Oly is eliminated. Olympiakos needs a win to qualify in the UCL knockout stage, but also Juventus needs to lose at home to Atletico … not likely. Of course, Olympiakos needs a draw to finish third ahead of Malmo.

The greek Champions are not in the best of form … in the last 4 matches they have 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses, including getting badly beat at Atletico Madrid in the last Champions League round … 4-0. Things are not going to plan at the moment but Olympiakos can draw confidence from their play at home in Europe … Oly won the last 5 matches at home in Champions League and this season won both vs. Atletico Madrid and vs. Juventus at home … unfortunately for them the 2-0 loss at Malmo killed their chances in this group. Milivojevic and Durmaz can not play this game for Olympiakos.

Malmo has only one absentee for this game, Johansson and for sure they will come to win because it is their only chance to finish third. They will be happy that they depend only on themselves, and 3 points would guarantee Europa League football. Malmo has surpassed expectations both in the preliminary UCL rounds and in the group … besides the 5-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid they really played well and put problems to everyone … two weeks ago vs. Juventus they could have led 1-0 but unfortunately ended up losing 2-0. Malmo did not play in the weekend so will be rested, but did not win any of the last 5 competitive games in regular time (got 2 wins in extra time in Swedish Cup and Supercup) … which is a really bad sign.

Olympiakos only needs a draw to finish third but for sure they will play for the win and hope for a miracle to qualify in the next stage. I wanted initially to take over 2,5 goals because both teams need to play open and score goals … but at a second thought I am not sure Malmo will score, Olympiakos is simply a different animal at home … Oly is a massive force in Greece and in a decisive game I will bet on them to give a lesson to the inexperienced Malmo. My tip will be Olympiakos  to win with -1,25 asian handicap in front of their insane Gate 7 fans. Oly not playing great recently but as I said it is a different team at home and I am also counting on Malmo’s very poor form. Correct score prediction: Olympiakos – Malmo 2-0.
