Olympique Lyon and Besiktas will square off in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals, in what is expected to be an evenly matched tie.
Lyon is having a very good year, sitting on the 4th place in France and currently playing fantastic in the Europa League, but the last few weeks haven`t been the best for the hosts. Lyon won a single game in the last 5 outings and that was mostly due to their shaky defense. Lyon can score in bunches, but they are also very leaky at the back – as proved in the previous EL round against Roma (4-2, 1-2).
Besiktas managed to overcome Olympiakos in the previous round (1-1, 4-1) and is currently riding an 11 match winning streak in all competitions. The visitors are leading the Turkish Super League pretty comfortably and given their results this season, they will surely feel they have a shot at getting something when they travel to France.

Lyon is simply scoring at will lately, while also conceding a ton of goals, which is not surprising if you look at how their lineup is constructed. They are the most offensive minded team in France, with an average of 3.25 goals being scored in their matches (!!) and they will meet another offensive minded team, currently owners of the best offense in Turkey (2.85 goals scored in average in Besiktas’ domestic games).
Lyon played 10 home matches in 2017 in all competitions and all of them saw 3 or more goals. The average number of goals scored in those matches stands at an unreal 5.0 per match!
The stats could really go on forever here and they all clearly indicate a high scoring game at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
While we know Europa League ties can be more cagey affairs, these two teams played the same type of football in this competition this year. In the KO stage, Lyon knocked out Alkmaar (4-1, 7-1) and Roma (4-2, 1-2). Besiktas knocked out Beer Sheva (3-1, 2-1) and Olympiakos (1-1, 4-1).
It`s hard to see any team failing to score in this one. Lyon`s offense is just too good, while Besiktas also has a very capable attack, will search for an away goal and should profit from Lyon’s leaky defense.
My tip is both teams to score, because the odds are (much) better than the ones for over 2.5 goals. The main (and pretty much only) logical argument against this bet seems to be the fact that Besiktas misses Aboubakar and Quaresma, but I don`t believe that will be enough to deny them a goal. Nevertheless, I will cut the stakes a little bit and keep them at 7 units. Prediction: Olympique Lyon – Besiktas 2-1.
