Peterborough – Sheffield U

bet on Peterborough Sheffield UnitedPeterborough welcomes Sheffield United in a bid to keep up their great level of play and maybe put some distance over other direct promotion hopefuls that are also in action today.

After relegating from the Championship last year, the home side has a fantastic season so far, being 2nd in the standings with 10 wins out of 12 matches and a goal difference of 24-8! It`s not such a big surprise, as Peterborough has a good squad and stability on the bench with Darren Ferguson (Sir Alex`s son) in his 6th year as manager, leaving aside a 1 year break in 2010. The hosts have always had a fantastic offense, but this year they really stepped up on the defensive end too. They like to keep possession and control games. Peterborough form is excellent with 6 consecutive wins in the League One, some of them against top sides like MK Dons, Rotherham or Preston. Their goal is to achieve direct promotion to the Championship, so they want to keep their current second place standing.

Sheffield United is having a miserable season until now. The visitors are a decent side but their form is abysmal, with 7 losses in the last 9 league games. They are on 20th place with just 8 points after 12 elapsed rounds and they have lost all away games. Sheffield does not seem able to recover and for all its worth, they could well be involved in the relegation battle. Not that they are so good overall, but they were expected to be able to avoid the drop. They are now under caretaker manager Chris Morgan and I doubt they can recover without stability on the bench. However, they did manage to get the first League One in a long time last round, a tight success against Port Vale (2-1).

Team news

Peterborough is without McCann, while Little is doubtful and Tomlin will start on the bench. Sheffield United does not have any new injuries or suspensions but Baxter is doubtful.  Cuvelier and Miller will be among the substitutes. Overall, both teams are relatively healthy so team news should not make a difference in the final result here.

Sheffield United has all sorts of problems both in management and concerning the football they are playing. Even though they won against Port Vale, it was a home game against mediocre opposition, they will have a completely different task in front of them today on the road, when they failed to win a point in the 6 games they played this season – and note that Peterborough is very strong at home. The home side is playing great football at the moment and they look really reliable, they are not the team to produce unpleasant surprises. They are very organized and have a well balanced squad. Their possession style of play will come in handy against a team unable to keep the ball or to properly defend. Peterborough can score against anyone but they are also strong at the back, and I can not find any logical reason for them not to get the 7th consecutive win against a team with such abysmal record on the road, maybe the usual unpredictability of the League 1 could be the only worrying factor.

Squad Quality, form, home court advantage, managerial stability, morale and tactical consistency are all on the home team`s side prior to this encounter. Even though we have Champions League today, Peterborough to win is the best bet of the day for me. They do need the three points badly, as Wolves and MK Dons both have accessible matches and could close the gap to the hosts in the standings. Expect the offensive duo of Assobalong and Barnett (13 goals between them so far) to make the difference yet again for Peterborough. My pick is Peterborough – Sheffield United 2-0 at some great odds from Pinny.
