Salzburg – Celtic

Salzburg Celtic betting tipsSalzburg and Celtic have been drawn in Group D of the Europa League along with Dinamo Zagreb and Astra Giurgiu.

Salzburg started the Austrian League with absolute brilliance, winning the first 6 matches with a 29-1 goal difference (!!!), but it`s safe to say they failed big time by missing out on Champions League, losing a shocking 3-0 at Malmo after winning the 1st leg 2-1. Not that signs of weakness were not there, as Salzburg struggled with Karabakh as well in the previous round, but this team apparently had it all: absolute destructive offensive power, proven European record in Europa League last year and some big money signings this year specifically made to reach the Champions League. Now Salzburg is left with a huge summer expenditure and some big wages, and it remains to be seen how missing out on UCL will affect them. So far it`s not looking good – After the Malmo loss Salzburg lost both games in Austria, and clearly morale is at an all time low.

Celtic surely has one of the weakest sides in its recent history right now. The Scots were humiliated 6-1 by Legia in the UCL qualies (and got off easy!), but UEFA gave them a lifeline by banning the Polish club. Celtic went on to lose to Maribor, I watched the reverse leg, Celtic was absolute rubbish, unable to create any chances at home after a 1-1 draw away and ended up losing 0-1. Celtic is not even dominant in Scotland anymore, being on the 4th place, though they do have 1 less match played and could go first with a win (Celtic postponed its weekend match). Prior to the 2-1 win against Aberdeen last week, Celtic was on a 5 match winless streak. Clearly the managerial change in the summer hurt the club badly and Rony Deila does not look able to get the job done (not that he has too much talent to work with).

Team news & lineups

Salzburg does not have big injury worries, Celtic will miss key players Lustik, Mulgrew and Matthews but will get captain Scott Brown back, which is excellent news for their low quality midfield.

Salzburg: Walke – Schwegler, Ankersen, Hinteregger, Ramalho – Ilsanker, Leitgeb, Kampl, Sabitzer – Soriano, Alan

Celtic: Gordon – Izaguirre, Van Dijk, Denayer, Ambrose – Brown, Kayal, McGregor, Commons, Tonev – Scepovic

Odds on overs and many goals are always low in Salzburg`s matches, but I don`t think this time the prices are justified. Salzburg clearly struggled in European games this season and none of their 4 outings finished with more than 3 goals, they are also in poor form and actually went scoreless against Wolfsberger in the weekend (though they did heavily dominate). Celtic is in deep crisis and after getting pounded by Legia recently I bet they will adopt a very defensive approach against an offensive – minded opponent. Also, the Scots are virtually non existent in attack right now. Celtic does have some missings in defense but getting Brown back as an anchor man will balance things out. My tip is under 3 goals. Prediction: Red Bull Salzburg – Celtic 2-0.

  1. Pertinent point of view. Good luck especially with the correct score 😉

  2. Salzburg is one of the best teams in form out of 5 tops leagues in europe, if you look at their statstic every game they shoot 20 times on goal, good ball possesion. If the goal opens up for them today, they can destroy Celtic, I think Salzburg wins for sure, maybe even 3 goals difference…pred: 4:1 Salzburg wins.

  3. Damn me,again that’s football! Celtic shoot 2 times on goal and score both times, and Salzburg 11 on goal…Soriano must be having problems with his girlfriend or something, cause he is great striker.

    • indeed he`s an amazing player, one of the most underrated strikers I have ever seen (now he gets more attention but previously nobody was noticing him).
