Roger Federer will finally make his comeback on the ATP Tour and his first match will be in the Monte Carlo second round against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Federer has not played a match since the Australian Open, having undergone surgery for a meniscus tear. He was due to come back in Miami a few weeks ago, but had to forfeit the match due to a stomach virus. Now Roger seems to finally be healthy, he trained daily in Monte Carlo over the last week and stated that he feels well. The Swiss Maestro seemed pretty confident about his game, but still said that his objective is simply to see how his body responds in an official match.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has not been in particularly good form lately and he had a mediocre season so far. He did play a couple of very good matches and put on a solid performance a few days ago, defeating Bellucci 7-6 6-1` in the first round here at Monte Carlo. He will definitely look to build on that.

Federer leads the Head 2 Head 3-0 and won all matches comfortably (never lost a set), but the last meeting was way back in 2009 and neither of the matches were played on clay. The surface in Monte Carlo will favor Garcia Lopez. The slow clay here is probably Roger’s worst surface on the whole tour, while the Spaniard really likes it.
Three main things make be believe that Garcia-Lopez can make this a competitive match. I`m talking about the fact that Federer is coming after a pretty long layoff which included surgery, the surface and the fact that he never forces big wins early in tournaments, he`s satisfied to keep it chill and do no more than is needed.
If Garcia-Lopez builds on his performance against Bellucci, he should give Federer a fight. I can see the Swiss maestro being rusty and making some errors, particularly on this slow clay – even though I agree that he could be better than expected, given how much he trained in the past 10 days.
