Romania – Finland

Anghel Iordanescu Romania Euro 2016

Anghel Iordanescu’s Romania will qualify for the Euro 2016 tournament if they win 4 points in these last two qualifying matches against Finland and Faroe Islands. Finland has an outside chance for the 3rd place, but they must win in Bucharest and need other results to go their way as well.

Romania hasn`t turned too many heads with their performance in this group, but they did the job and are very close to reaching the final tournament in France. With an organized brand of football and a good defense, Romania will be virtually qualified with a victory today, also benefiting from having the easiest group in the qualifying tournament (and from Greece’s collapse). The Romanians are on the back of three consecutive 0-0 draws against Northern Ireland, Hungary (both away) and Greece.

Finland, who was 99% out of the qualifying race a couple of months ago, gave itself a small chance to qualify by winning the last two matches, 1-0 against both Faroe Islands and Greece. All of Finland’s 10 points in the group came against these two sides. It`s still very unlikely that the visitors can book the third place, but they will come to Romania looking for a win and hoping Faroe Islands or Greece can spring an upset against Hungary / Northern Ireland.

Team news & lineups:

The only big news is that key man Eremenko is injured for Finland, otherwise the two teams should line up pretty much like they did in the previous National team roundup.

România: Tătăruşanu – Papp, Chiricheş, Grigore, Raţ – Hoban, Pintilii – Popa, Stancu, Torje – Keserü

Finland: Hradecky – Arkivuo, Halsti, Arajuuri, Uronen – Ring, Toivio, Sparv, Hetemaj – Riski, Pukki

The Romanians will be boosted by the fact that UEFA lifted a one match ban and fans ran wild to buy tickets, determining great anticipation against this match, which will likely see 50.000 fans in the stands and a great atmosphere. Romanian football fans are desperate to see their team qualify to a final tournament after 7 years and there`s great excitement around the country.

Finland did a good job to win 1-0 against Greece and Faroe Islands in the previous NT roundup, but a motivated Romania will be a totally different task. The hosts are still undefeated in this group, they are in great form and will be extremely motivated to get the three points in order to virtually qualify and have a relaxed trip to Faroe in the last round. The fact that Finland needs a win and can’t just sit and defend will help Romania – whose biggest issue is breaking down crowded defenses.

My tip is Romania to win. The odds are massive, no way they should be more than 1.60 here. Given the excellent price, but also the security of the prediction, I will invest 10 units on this bet. It should be a comfortable home win, so pick Romania to the job here in Bucharest. Prediction: Romania – Finland 2-0.

Pick: Romania

I do belive that a bet on over/under market is much safer, due to cautious approach of Iordanescu so i choose to select under 2,5 (also i was thinking about both team to score – no) on this match, filling my betting slip with two other matches: Hungary – Faroe – HA 1,5 Hungary and Scotland – Poland – both teams to score.
    Good luck.cheers

    • I see where you’re coming from, but there`s the fact that Finland still has a shot to qualify if they win this game, which Romanian media seems to omit. Of course I don`t expect Finland to come out guns blazing, but they might choose to be a bit more attacking – minded and this would open up the game.

I think it will be an under, but for the above stated reason I think a Romanian win is safer.

As for your combo, it seems risky. Both Hungary and Scotland BTS are no bankers, I actually fear Hungary more and I have a tip coming up to explain my reasoning. Hopefully Scotland will play according to their needs and attack. Good luck mate!

  2. They are in good form? They scored in the last 4 games one goal against feroe. Agains greece they played poor also. How did you figure that they are in good form my friend?

    • Well, I guess it depends how you look at it. Romania did what they needed to do against Hungary and Northern Ireland, they also deserved to beat Greece. The team is undefeated and does not allow goals. I`d say that`s good form for a team like Romania.

  3. Yes indeed.they don t alow goals.but they can score .and to win you have to score .i disagree with you when you say they are in good form
