Giraldo – Lopez

Giraldo Lopez betting tipsSantiago Giraldo and Feliciano Lopez will open the day at ATP Gstaad with an early Friday quarterfinal.

Giraldo played some of his best tennis this week, losing just 10 games against Lorenzi and Ilhan – not the best opponents, but dangerous on clay. The Colombian wasn`t in his best form coming into Gstaad, but we know he`s a streaky player who can be extremely dangerous when his in form, especially on clay courts. The way he`s playing this week, limiting his unforced errors, it looks like this could be a very good tournament for him.

Feliciano Lopez had a bye in the first round and then struggled with Julian Reister, needing 3 sets to overcome a modest adversary. The hard fought win wasn`t so surpsising though – just another mediocre performance from Lopez and in this kind of form you really can`t expect him to do damage on clay, by far his worst surface. Feliciano’s season has been a massive downgrade compared to an excellent 2014 and his current form is dreadful – he did not win more than 1 match in a tournament since early March, even on his beloved grass he couldn`t do anything. He lost to Basilashvili in Wimbledon in his last tournament – this week is his first clay court tournament since Roland Garros.

The Head 2 Head is 2-0 for Lopez, but both matches were played on hard courts before 2010, so this Head 2 Head holds zero relevance. The surface will be a key matchup, as Giraldo is a very good clay courter, while Lopez is exclusively a fast court player. Clay is his worst surface, no doubt about that.

Feliciano’s ranking and name are the only two things that keep his odds respectable, because truth to be told, it`s very hard to imagine him winning this match. His serve is his only weapon right now, but he can`t use it that effectively on clay. His forehand is not clicking and his backhand is a joke, just poor slices that do not trouble anybody. He can`t stay in a rally and he can`t find opportunities to come at the net.

Giraldo on the other hand is a great clay courter, much faster than Lopez and much more accustomed to the surface. He will outrun Feli for sure, forcing him to move and hit on the run, something that the Spaniard is unable to do on the red dirt. Much better form for Giraldo, a huge surface advantage and he has more matches under his belt on the mid-season clay swing as well. My tip is a Giraldo win. Prediction: Santiago Giraldo – Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-4.
