Shakhtar – Young Boys

Paulo Fonseca Mircea Lucescu Shakhtar manager

Shakhtar Donetsk begins life without Mircea Lucescu in Europe with a Champions League qualifying tie against Young Boys, on the non – champions route.

Shakhtar lost manager Lucescu under 12 years under his command, as he left for Zenit Sankt Petersburg. The team made a good hire in the person of Paulo Fonseca, who did some good stuff at Braga last season. There wasn`t much transfer activity in the summer, which is not bad news for Shakhtar, as they always sold better players than they bought. Just Gladkiy left this summer, to rivals Dynamo, who beat Shakhtar to the title last season.

The high scoring Young Boys is on the back of another second place finish in Switzerland, again way behind Basel (14 points). It wasn`t their best season, especially due to some horrible losses in Europe, but they will hope to do better this time around and repeat some of the great upsets they were known for in Continental competitions. The visitors have already played a competitive game this season, beating St Gallen 2-0 on the road as the Swiss League started last weekend.

Shakhtar is playing for the first time in 12 years in Europe without manager Mircea Lucescu so there might be a bit of confusion here and there on the pitch, maybe some defensive errors. On the other hand, their South American talent up front should be able to bang in the goals as usual. These suppositions become even more probable considering the super offensive type of football Braga played under Paulo Fonseca.

Young Boys has always been a very offensive minded team, last year in Switzerland their games saw the most goals in the league – an average of 3,47 goals / game being scored in their matches. Europe has not been different, as they were always involved in high scoring games, win or lose. At this stage last year, they lost 1-3 and 0-4 to Monaco.

Both sides play offensive football and score goals, Young Boys Bern is poor at defending and with Shakhtar’s manager change I think there are also the proper circumstances for a high scoring game. Sahtior should win the game with goals to spare, but Young Bous should be able to score as well, they have already started the league and meet an opponent that is just embarking on a new road.

My tip is over 2,5 goals to be scored. The match will be played in Lviv, where Shakhtar plays its home matches for some time. It must be said that odds on this bet are dropping pretty fast. Prediction: Shakhtar Donetsk – Young Boys Bern 3-1.
