Local favorite Sloane Stephens will square off against Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia in the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open.
Sloane Stephens made a return on the tour on the American hard courts after missing the entire season due to foot surgery, and she surpassed everyone’s expectation by playing some great tennis. Stephens reached the semifinals in both pre – US Open Masters tournaments and didn`t slow down in the last week here in New York. Although she had some issues along the way, Stephens did well to get past Vinci, Cibulkova, Barty and Goerges, conceding two sets in these 4 matches. Her 6-3 3-6 6-1 win over Goerges in the fourth round was excellent, as Goerges was in great form and played some very solid tennis for most of that match.
Anastasija Sevastova is on the back of a huge win against Maria Sharapova, coming back from one set down to reach her second consecutive US Open quarterfinal. Sevastova didn`t play great on the American hard courts in the last couple of months (3 wins, 2 losses) and she didn`t particularly impress here in New Yourk either. Although Sevastova lost a single set, against Sharapova, her previous wins against Witthoeft, Kozlova and Vekic really didn`t say much, and only against Vekic did she truly dominate.

An analysis of matchup, surface and styles won`t say much, as neither player seems to have an advantage, although Sloane’s speed might be a bit difficult for Sevastova to handle.
The Latvian has been in good form over the past week, but she didn`t play lights out tennis, and her win against Sharapova is definitely a little bit overrated. Sharapova herself has been overrated in this tournament and in the match with Sevastova she was blowing errors all over the place, eventually running out of gas as well.
Sevastova will now have to handle a completely different opponent, a fast baseliner who will not give her as many free points as Sharapova did. If one thing can be said about Stephens, is that she has been extremely consistent on the American hard courts this year. She only lost against Halep and Wozniacki.
Also working in Sloane’s advantage is the fact that Sevastova is a known headcase, and she always seems to choke on the big stage. The fact that she is coming after one of the biggest wins of her career (which can always have a hangover impact) increases the chance of a Sevastova meltdown in this match.
There`s also a fair question to be asked if Stephens will be able to keep it going after playing so much tennis recently, considering this will be her 15th match in the last month, after coming back from injury. But Stephens showed absolutely no signs of fatigue so far at the US Open.
I reckon Sevastova had her moment of glory against Sharapova, I don`t see an upset here. My tip is Stephens to win and I believe 7-8 units represents a reasonable stake on this bet. Prediction: Sloane Stephens – Anastasija Sevastova 4-6 6-3 6-2.
